Spotify can be a great service for finding and playing your favorite artists – or even discovering new music – with a just few clicks or taps. This project, by creator PatrickF29, does things a bit differently by assigning physical buttons to songs and playlists on Spotify. Simply press a button and it plays your desired content!

The heart of the build is one or more Makey Makey devices, which trigger virtual keyboard inputs based on physical button presses. These buttons are wired up via several breadboards, arranged in a customized cardboard housing, and hidden behind a wall-sized History of Rock chart from the movie “School of Rock.” The buttons poke through this chart next to the appropriate label for an elegantly simple user interface.

Button/keyboard presses are translated into Spotify playlist hotkeys through hotkeyplayer.com, so that when the site is open all you have to do is press the appropriate button and your selection starts playing. One Makey Makey can accommodate 12 buttons, and multiple Makies can be used if you need more options. PatrickF29 actually used six of these devices on his project, but would not recommend using that many if you decide to create something similar!

The project looks like a fun and approachable build, allowing for a unique way to interact with your music. A short demo can be seen in the video below!
