If you have an Arduino and an old PS/2 mouse lying around, perhaps this experiment by HomeFaciens will be of interest. In the video below, he illustrates how you can hook a mechanical mouse up to an Arduino board using a mechanical mouse’s +5v, ground, clock, and data pins.

This can also be done with an optical mouse by reading data straight off of the processing chip. Besides the video, you can see more information on this project at HomoFaciens.de including a link to his “very experimental” software listed next to a picture of the optical chip. It’s an entertaining project, made even more so by the author’s narration and unique camera work!
