The move to wireless video game controllers was a smart one. No more scooting the couch closer to the TV so the cords can reach. No more friends tripping over your cable and disconnecting the controller in the middle of an intense GoldenEye match. But, many of us still love playing games on old consoles like the Nintendo 64. Luckily, you can have the best of both worlds with this mod that lets you use Xbox 360 controllers on your N64.
That’s possible thanks to a custom circuit board developed by Ryzee119, which is available to pre-order now for $79.00 AUD (about $59.00 USD). It’s a small Arduino-compatible board that acts as a USB host for the Xbox 360 receiver, and then passes the control signals to the N64 internally. To install it, you’ll need to take apart your N64, make some small modifications to the case, and solder a few wires. But, once you do, you’ll have full support for Xbox 360 controllers via the added USB port. Just plug in an Xbox 360 wireless receiver, and the N64 will treat the wireless controllers just like the originals.
For those of you who are serious about gaming, you can rest assured that this well thought out. There doesn’t appear to be any noticeable difference in latency, and you have full support for Rumble Paks and Memory Paks. Four Xbox 360 controllers can be connected simultaneously, and the board doesn’t delay the console booting at all. You can even still use the original N64 controllers if you’re feeling nostalgic! While it’s not supported out of the box, it’s also possible to add support for other controllers through the Arduino.
