I rented a small house which had a heating unit but didn't want to use it as I spent most of the time in the bedroom when I'm home. I had a space heater but didn't do a good job as regulating temperature and I had to keep turning it on and off. And I felt the worst when I forget to turn it off when I'm away.
So my solution is a plugin thermostat with remote temperature sensing. This will allow me to utilize my space heater I had without taking it apart (though I did consider that route) and control the temperature of any space by moving the remote temperature sensor. Another feature is a schedule for so I can save on my bill when I'm away at work then come home to a warm bedroom.
Check out the link below for a schematic. Again it's for a barebone Atmega328 but you can use just an Arduino.
