When placed in a device and wired to the positive and negative ends of the battery contacts in the compartment it allows me to use 12vdc from a car or boat to drive the device, after dropping it down to the battery's voltage, using a step down DC to DC voltage regulator, such as a RioRand LM2596 DC-DC Buck Converter Step Down Module Power Supply Output 1.23V-30V (1Pcs-LM2596) sold on Amazon.     I have used over 100 of these in all sorts of projects. This is my go-to. The best thing about them is that a simple 8 mm hole in your case will allow you to add one of these to your project after it has been hard wired to the rest of the circuit. That makes assembly easy. They go together well and I have only had one failure out of all of them and I suspect it was my fault due to rough handling. They provide a reasonably secure power socket at a great price.
