Works great. Very thick and a little hard to cut.

I use the kitchen shears which works fairly well. It will leave black dust if you swish it around in your tank at all, but if you precut it, rinse it, put it directly in your filer and don't move it around, you will not see any black dust. I have used it for medication removal, and it's amazing. A green/blue/yellow tinted tank will be 100% clear the next day as the carbon absorbs everything. I do throw the medication removal carbon out once the medication has been removed (a day or so).

I know using carbon in an aquarium is really up to personal choice as it's not completely necessary (other than medication removal), but I choose to use it for the polishing effect it has on my water. It really helps the water be crystal clear, so my use is for purely aesthetic purposes. As far as odor removal, my tank has never had a bad odor. It does have a lovely river water smell though. If I open the lid and take a whiff, I am instantly transported back to playing in the river as a kid. It is really a lovely smell. Thankfully, the carbon doesn't remove that!

I do change it every 3-4 weeks to make sure I'm getting maximum effectiveness.

I probably don't strictly need the carbon, but I like it as an extra chemical filtration. I am addicted to all three types of filtration: mechanical (which this one also helps with), biological (I love my little Matrix bacteria hotels!), and chemical (hence this carbon).

Note: If you are cleaning your tank and not ready to swap out the carbon for new (you'll be putting this same carbon back in if you are replacing other elements in your filter), make sure to squeeze the carbon out to shake all the loose material that got stuck in it. But big tip, do it last in your dirty tank water! When I change the water, I set aside a bucket of the water I just drained out to squeeze and swish current filter media that I'll continue to use, but if I do the carbon first, all the water turns back with dust and everything else I rinse in there get the black dust on it. So swish the carbon last.

We’d purchased a fish tank that came with a filtration system built in from a major pet store chain a few years back. Soon after purchasing, the company who made the filters that fit our filtration system stopped making that SKU. For months, I tried in vain to find another filter substitute of the same size since I didn’t want to spend the equivalent of the whole bundled tank again. Finally, a local store turned me on to these cut-to-size carbon media pads. It’s great value for the dollar (I get 3x the filters out of these for the same price) and helps me keep my non-standard sized filtration system.

After seeing some tutorials online for homemade pet fountain filters, I was really excited to find this for such a great price--and it's lived up to every expectation! It was easy to cut to size with a knife or rotary cutter, and we got over a year's worth of filters out of this stuff. It's been in the cat's fountain for about two months now, and working GREAT! Not particularly impressed with these pads. I am running it in a canister filter and tank started to get cloudy. These have only been in a couple of weeks so I cleaned the filter, rinsed the pads and hooked back up. No results after 3 more days. Added a HOB filter with some granulated carbon overnight and saw huge results, clear as a bell after night 2. Leads me to believe that the carbon pads are not doing their water polishing job. I can't be sure so I won't bash, but it sure seems suspicious that a little classic granulated carbon cleaned me right up.

If your starting a saltwater tank i would recommend getting this product, i know using tap water is not good to use for this hobby but at the time it was cheaper and very convenient.. I cut 2 pieces of this carbon media and used it to filter my tap water before going into my display tank and it cleaned the water better than expected

Perfect for multiple uses! These pads are generously sized and easy to cut and use. I used them to make fish tank filters, turtle tank filters, and even pet water fountain filters, as some other reviewers suggested. I see little flecks of the carbon sometimes settling at the bottom of my pet fountains, but I didn't see any discoloration in the water. My pets seem to be drinking more water after adding these for filters.

For my fish tanks they keep the water crystal clear and I don't have any of the 'fishy' odor that tanks can sometimes have. I used them inside Aqueon Quietflow filters and they do an amazing job! Just combine them with a sheet of filter floss and you're good to go. Much cheaper than buying the cartridges. I keep these in my tank until they're pretty much falling apart. I just rinse them off in some old tank water when doing water changes and pop them back in. Same goes for the turtle tank.

When I first got them I tried rinsing them out, but the carbon seems to be really well infused with the fibers and I didn't see very much of it come off. It's definitely worth it for the sheer amount of money you'll save on filters if you use them in a pet fountain or tank. With just one pad I was able to supply myself with two large filters for the turtle tank, two filters for each of my fish tanks, and multiple small filters for my pet fountains.

I have a large ceramic cat water fountain (which I love) that has a charcoal-filled filter that needs to be replaced every month. At $7 a filter, that adds up. So I bought this charcoal medium and very gently pried the filter housing apart. I cut a piece of this filter medium into the right shape and put it into the filter housing. It works perfectly! This will save me a lot of money and my cats are happy to have filtered water.

Does a good job and lasts a long time. Much cheaper to cut my own pads than buy the pre-made ones. I use one sheet of this and one sheet of the basic white pad at the same time. I get about a month out of it and my levels are always good.

I have 3 aquariums of various sizes at home, buying filter cartridges can get quite expensive.I decided to switch to this type of filters. I couldn't find this product anywhere in my local shops. It is about 1 cm thick and the foam is quite stiff. I like the thickness of the filter. I used my old filter as a guide when cutting these, between the 25, 10 and 2 gallon tanks, I reckon I can get around 12 filters in total (of various sizes). Since I can wash and reuse it, one sheet will last me quite a long time Although the filter is quite thick and dense, all my filters run smoothly (I had to turn down the flow for one of them but not a real issue). Make sure you rinse the foam before putting it in the filter, this way the carbon particles will not run into your tank. I am glad I got this product and I think it will work well for your tanks as well. I reckon one sheet can save me at least $50 in filter cartridges.

UPDATE: I started using these with the white mesh bags for filter media available at pet stores. It keeps the tiny carbon particles from running into the tank.

Needs to be rinsed thoroughly before use because of the infused charcoal. Had a bit of fallout first time using, some of which my goldfish ate but they were perfectly fine. It's quite stiff until worked while rinsing & very fine mesh. Comes as large piece, cut and use as needed. Just what I was hoping for.
