About this item
- This prototyping shield is the best out there (well, we think so, at least), and now is even better with Version R3 - updated for the most compatibility with just about all the Arduinos! It works with UNO, Mega, Leonardo, NG, Diecimila, Duemilanove, and compatible Arduinos. Yun's and Arduino Ethernets have a chunky Ethernet jack that gets in the way of stacking, you can use the stacking headers included and it will work, just doesn't sit nice and flat.
- It has a nice standard 0.1"x0.1" prototying grid with big pads. Comes with Stacking headers and plain header, choose whichever you want when soldering together. A IC pattern for adding DIP ICs up to 20 pins
- Power rails down the middle and sides, A reset button and an extra general use button, 2 3mm general use LEDs, red and green, as well as 2 matching resistors, A pass-thru ICSP stacking header so you can stack any kind of shield on top, and/or use an AVR programmer, A surface-mount chip area for up to 14 SOIC size parts
- Compatible with tiny breadboards, Every pin is brought out!, Gold plated pads, 2 x 0.1uF capacitors on either side for extra power stability
- Soldering Required: Comes as a kit of parts so you can choose how you want to configure your shield. However its very easy to assemble even for beginning solderers.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2016Excellent! I could not be happier with this proto shield. As expected from Adafruit, it is a beautiful, high quality shield. It does not come assembled, which I was both expecting and looking forward to. It arrived promptly, in a bubble envelope. I was somewhat disappointed with the packaging, everything was in loose plastic bags and a few of the pins on some of the headers were bent. No major damage, they bent back easily. But thats a seller issue, not a product issue.
It comes with both female stacking headers and normal male headers, I chose to use the stacking headers. Mine came with an extra 8-pin stacking header. As to the normal headers, there were more than enough to get the job done. It comes with a green and a red LED, 2 matching resistors, 2 matching capacitors, and 2 button-switches. These components all need to be soldered to the shield.
I am a college student, and not accomplished with a soldering iron. I was looking forward to assembling this myself to brush up on my soldering skills. The instructions, found on the adafruit website (not physically provided), areV clear, complete, and easy to follow. There are multiple pictures and an explanation for each step. I had no problems assembling it, everything lines up with the arduino uno perfectly. I had my iron at 300 degrees Celsius.
It does not come with a breadboard, but can accommodate boards of different lengths. In addition to the normal header power and ground, it has ground and 5 V rails running down the top/bottom, center and along the right side of the PCB. One of the button switches connects to the uno reset, and the other is optional. You can connect to it if it suits your application.
This suits my needs perfectly and I will purchase again if/when I want another shield.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2023Worked great for building my simple RFID Scanner. Some reviews dinged this product because assembly was required. Isn’t soldering and assembling components part of the electronics hobby? Anyway works great and allows me to snap projects on and off off my arduino. Instructions online were easy to follow
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2015Excellent product, I'm glad this board is not preassembled allowing me to customize the headers for my purposes!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2023Excellent for building finished circuits on the Arduino
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2016I found that soldering was straightforward generally, but challenging in some cases. The pad locations for the the LEDs and button are very tight to access. Partly my fault though as I used slightly larger LEDs (I wanted blue). Found that soldering in a single header pin for those components allow easy use once soldered. I'm using it with a mini-breadboard, which fits into the breadboarding space, leaving the surface mount areas and small number of pad available on one end. Sure I'll end up with several of these.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2016Eh. I suppose I didn't read this requires soldering. This is a kit. That said; this is the best photo shield out there.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2017Great board loads of options this 1st board I chose to put the headers down the middle to provide ample power still room to add items if needed like a logic level shifter, relay or any number of sensors although I'm on the fence with a temp sensor as it may pick up temps from nearby components will defiantly being buying a few more!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2015I bought this shield to use with my Arduino Uno. I needed to connect a relay, RTC, and a ping sensor. I downloaded the instructions, which were excellent and easy to follow. I was able to solder everything to the board with plenty of room to spare. I'm using it to run an automated pump controller for my aquaponics system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good indeed
I used this for a temperature sensor and SPI board and it works great! Very easy to solder. Included male header pins are very helpful but I used the female pins so it could stack. Used the male ones to connect the power and connect up the SPI interface.
