Tape that works!

Tape that works!
My MacBook charger was starting to get frayed. I’d plug it in and the battery would be “plugged in” but not “charging”. I refuse to waste $80 buying yet another power adapter so I did some research which suggested silicon tape over electric tape. Ordered this and have been really pleased. First time using silicon tape, instructions come with it. Not too tricky because the “tape” isn’t sticky at all in your fingers but it sticks to itself. I did a bit of a hack job because I was impatient, but it worked, and my computer now charges again, so I’m happy. I overestimated how much tape I’d use the first time but a little bit goes a long way. Apple cords and wires seem to have an uncanny ability to fray and fall apart the second AppleCare expires, so I’m sure I’ll be using this more in the future.

This X-Treme self-amalgamating tape more nearly approaches magical than any other product I have used. Buy it! I can't imagine you will be disappointed.

My applications are in protecting weather-exposed RF connectors and other amateur radio antenna parts, and for those uses it's perfect. In ham radio, it's a natural for protecting any two mating surfaces you can wrap it around: PL-259 to SO-239, N-types, barrel connectors, bulkhead connectors and the like. It's perfect for sealing element-to-wave-trap junctions and great for use on wire antenna halyard lines. Think of it as somewhat functionally similar to heat-shrink tubing that doesn't require heat.

I have used several rolls of X-Treme tape. I won't be without it. I can offer these observations from lots of satisfying experience:

As intended, X-Treme tape sticks only to itself. That's how it works. Don't buy it expecting to use it like ordinary tape to stick something to something else. It won't.

Read and follow the instructions. This is important. Even if you aren't an instruction-reading type, read these; you'll be glad you did. The manufacturer has great instructional videos and they are on point.

For your first use, you will be well advised to cut off a short section of tape and remove the backing as you wrap. If it's too short, just add more. With practice---and depending on the shape and size of your workpiece and on the clearance around it---you may be able to cut off a long section of tape and remove the backing before you begin to wrap.

Because of X-Treme tape's remarkable quality of sticking only to itself, be sure to make a complete first wrap before you begin any diagonal overwrapping. For your last wrap, be sure the end of the tape is in complete contact with the tape you've just applied, or you will have a flying end that doesn't stick to your workpiece.

Don't tension the initial or final wrap. Do tension all wraps after the first and before the last. The manufacturer cautions not to reposition the product more than two minutes after application. In my experience, you better take care of any repositioning needed within seconds of application or you'll be too late.

To promote rain runoff, overlap your wraps in the style of roof shingles, working from a lower point to a higher point.

X-Treme tape is beautifully conformable and somewhat forgiving in application. Its self-fusing quality and triangular cross-section allow ridges to disappear. Your overlaps can be imperfect and you can still achieve a smooth, nice looking result.

You can overwrap a cured seal with electrical tape for additional abrasion resistance, but you won't need to for UV protection. X-Treme tape already is resistant to UV damage. I have had X-Treme tape exposed to the elements 24/7 for several years without any visible degradation. And in cases where I eventually removed the wrap, the fittings underneath were clean, dry and still looked new.

Remove the cured product by slicing it with the tip of a sharp utility knife. It comes off cleanly and leaves absolutely no residue. None! For my uses, that's among its best properties.

This is one of those rare products that I can recommend with absolute confidence. Buy it, follow the instructions and be prepared to be amazed.

It is clear there is no adhesive as part of this tape. However, I used it to 'seal' some underground RG-6 cable splices and barrel connectors as part of a cable television cable repair.

The tape seems to 'stick' to itself only after applying adequate tension by pulling the tape taut while wrapping the connectors. The tape is very pliable and conformed well to all the peaks and valleys of the connectors, again, as long as it's pulled tight while wrapping.

The trick is pulling hard/tight enough to cause friction between the tape already in place and the newly placed tape on the outside. I overlapped each wrap half-way over the other the entire length to insure an adequate seal of the material.

The last tail section of the wrap did not seem to be as tight as the other wraps because it was difficult to maintain friction on the last little piece. So extend the wraps slight past the connectors, slightly longer than necessary to insure the tape would continue to seal should the 'tail' of the wrap become more loose.

Would I use/buy it again? Truth is, only time will tell, but after seeing how well it seemed to seal, I would consider using this tape for a repair that would be submerged in a liquid (water, etc.) given how well it seems to seal when applied.

I understand why other reviewers were not excited about the product. But if you apply it properly, I believe it will create a water resistant if not a waterproof seal in almost any application.

I have to admit that when I first received this tape I took one look at it and said to myself "This will never work for what I need." I use a wheelchair and the rubber tubing that covers the metal push rim on my wheels as tearing and I needed to find something that had a grip feel to it and would stick to the metal of the push rim of my wheel. I ordered one roll--hoping that this would be "the cure." When I got it, I tossed it in my "junk" drawer and said to myself, "maybe it will come in handy for something else." I then ordered so different type of tape. When that didn't work either, I became frustrated and was trying everything. I hated my hands always getting black from the iron push rims. Then today I was looking for something to cover a worn spot on my wheelchair--just to give the metal a protective barrier when I would dismantle my chair to put it in my car--the metal frame would rub on the concrete or asphalt and it was wearing thin. I saw this tape in my junk drawer and I thought I would give it a try. No go--wouldn't stick to metal--duh! But I thought, okay, let's try it on the push rims of my wheels. So I cut off a 2-foot length and began wrapping it around my push rims. I got SOOOOO EXCITED! It stuck to itself like glue and as long as I overlapped the layers, it worked like magic! Yes, I've only had it on my wheels now for a total of 25 minutes, but I am so excited. The silicone has a great grip--I won't need to use my gloves once the weather gets warmer! I'll update this when I see how it wears, but right now I have another roll in my shopping cart because one roll didn't quite do both wheels! THANK YOU! I am praying that this continues to hold as good as it is right now!!!!!

Used this on a leaky pipe in the airing cupboard that ran from the hot water overflow tank, which had been leaking for some time without our notice until the kitchen ceiling started to show a damp patch. Cut a length of this tape and wrapped around the leak a few times and by the next day the leak was fixed.

It works exactly how its described. Just follow the instruction and one will get the result.
In this particular case the Tape was used to seal a leak in connection between an exhaust pipe and a muffler.
Im writing this review after ~8 weeks since "repair" has been done - no issues at all.
