Turn Any Wall Switch into an Insteon Remote Controllable Switch

The Micro On/Off Module keeps your existing antique, toggle, or decorative wall switches while adding the customizable remote control functionality of an On/Off Wall Switch.

Adding home control to an elaborately decorated home can be tricky, especially when it comes to working around antique or custom switches. The Insteon Micro On/Off Module installs behind the switch to allow custom dimmable remote control and automation without sacrificing style.

Available versions are compatible with US electrical systems as well as the EU, Australia, and New Zealand. Also available as a wire-in Micro Dimmer Module (2442-222) or Micro Open/Close Module (2444-222).

Features:

  • Turn your antique, custom color, or non-standard wall switches into home automation switches
  • Smallest inline module wires in behind your existing switches, outlets, and above light fixtures
  • Compatible with latching, single momentary, and dual momentary switches
  • Sense wiring retains local control at the switch
  • Control up to 1800W resistive, 350W inductive, or 1000W low voltage
  • Remote control from Insteon sensors, wall switches, remotes, and more
  • Set schedules, configure scenes, and remotely control Micro Module from your smartphone with the Insteon Hub
  • Featuring dual-band Insteon technology for the fastest and most reliable performance

Why You Need the Insteon Micro Module

insteon remote control

Hidden & Remote Control

Add remote switch and brightness control to almost any light fixture in your home. Sometimes the wall switch is just too far away. Grab your smartphone and brighten and dim your switch to your heart's content.

The Micro Module is incredibly compact - less than 2-inches square and just more than 1/2inch thick - so you can install it almost anywhere. Slip the Micro Module behind your existing wall switch or add it on the fixture-side if you’re missing neutrals in your switchbox.

insteon custom

Discreet Installation

Micro Modules keep your antique, toggle, or decorative wall switches by installing behind your existing switch. It is also one of the smallest inline modules ever, and fits into almost all boxes!

Due to its hidden nature, we highly recommend using the Insteon app with the Insteon Hub to manage the Micro On/Off Module.

insteon switch

Switch Options

The Micro Module is the ultimate solution to custom or antique décor switches.

If you’re attached to your wall switches, the Micro Module includes special sense wires that let you use existing latching switches or more unique push button and toggle switches.

insteon schedule

Schedules & Scenes

Automatically turn your porch lights on at dusk. Wake up to a gentle pseudo-sunrise at 7AM. You can schedule individual wall switches or full groups of switches for particular hours and days of the week.

With the Insteon Hub, scenes really take on a new level. Program one switch to turn off all of the downstairs lights. Configure another to turn on Movie Mode. And because you can schedule scenes, you can give your home that "lived in" look even when you're away.

Insteon Micro Modules Make Lighting Easy with Insteon Sensors

insteon 2843-222

Doors & Windows

There are some rooms in your home that, no matter what time of day, you always end up turning on the lights: Pantries, closets, hallways, etc.

With an Insteon Wall Switch (2477D/S, 2474DWH) and an Open/Close Sensor (2843-222) or Hidden Door Sensor (2845-222), you will never need to turn the light on again. And better yet, you'll never need to remember to turn it off.

insteon 2844-222

Motion & Occupancy

Do you play whack-a-mole all day, turning off the lights in rooms that your significant other or children have habitually left on?

Turn every Insteon Wall Switch into an occupancy-sensing switch with an Insteon Motion Sensor (2844-222). And with Insteon, your Motion Sensor can control multiple Wall Switches simultaneously for large rooms or long hallways.

insteon smoke bridge

Smoke & Carbon Monoxide

Receive specific notification in case of smoke, carbon monoxide, low battery, all clear, or error messages.

No one wants to think about the potential for a disaster, but if one were to happen, make your escape as safe as possible by automatically turning on lights to an escape path when Smoke Bridge (2982-222) detects smoke, fire, or carbon monoxide from a linked First Alert OneLink detector.

insteon 74551

Garage Door

Remotely monitor and operate your garage door with your smartphone.

It's not only cool, it's handy too. Whenever you open your garage door, turn on the overhead lights for easier entry and exit from your vehicle with the Insteon Garage Door Control & Status Kit (74551). And while you're at it, turn the outside sconces and walkway lights on too for that extra bit of illuminated peace-of-mind when you come home late at night.

Product Description

Adding remote control to wired lights usually means replacing switches - not any more. With Insteon's new dual-band Micro On/Off Module, you can keep your antique, toggle or decorative wall switches while adding the same remote control functionality of SwitchLinc. This compact module installs behind your existing switch, giving it full Insteon automation while retaining local control at the switch by way of sense wires. Connect the sense wires to any style wall switch to match any type of designer theme (antique, push-button, metal, etc.) The Micro On/Off is so tiny that it can be installed as an in-line module within a fixture box, providing remote control without having to run wires to a wall switch.

I was surprised at how easy it was to install
This little control solved the problem of making an outdoor porch light into an automatic late. I was surprised at how easy it was to install, and how will it fit into the wall box behind the regular switch. I also discovered that it can be used as part of a three-way switch.

Home automation has been a hobby of mine since 2008. I have used X-10, Insteon, and now most recently, Z-wave. With old X-10 switches, you barely had any choice for non-dimming loads: you had a couple of relay switch models that were very noisy, and all of these were Decora style switches. I never liked Decora style, but X-10 was an economical option at the time. Insteon has offered the ToggleLinc for years, but it still doesn't feel like a normal switch. With the micro switch, you just wire it in behind your existing switch. It should fit, but it's tight. This micro switch is slightly smaller than the Z-Wave version, but the difference isn't really as big as you'd think when you read the dimensions of both products.

    These are the pros:

    1. This switch is quiet. You barely hear the relay click when it turns on or off.

    2. It's fast. There is almost no delay in switching that you might notice with some of the old X-10 modules. For comparison, Insteon ON/OFF switches should send commands out at around 13 kilobits/sec, while X-10 products transmit data at 60 bits/sec. Z-wave is even faster at up to 40 kilobits/sec. These are like EPA mileage estimates, though, and don't actually give information about reliability and real world speed.

    3. It's relatively small. You should be able to easily fit one of these in a single gang, 18 cubic inch box behind a regular toggle switch. I have several duplex switches where I have squeezed two modules behind the switch in 22 cubic inch, single gang boxes. I wouldn't recommend this, though. In some cases, I cut an opening for a dual gang box and installed a retrofit plus two toggle switches in the duplex switches place.

    4. It's a repeater, controller, and responder. This means it will repeat Insteon commands, so your network is strengthened. It can be set to control other Insteon devices. This is useful if you have, for example a bunch of Insteon controlled floor lamps that you always turn on or off in combination with this device and you don't have a remote handy and/or local control is inconvenient. It will likewise respond to other Insteon devices in a group.

    5. You can use it in your X-10 system if you don't have an Insteon controller. It will receive and transmit X-10 over the power line, it looks like, but I don't use this feature. It does not repeat X-10 commands, so if you are looking for an alternative to installing a phase coupler to improve X-10 signals on different phases, this isn't it.

    Here are the cons:

    1. It's not 100% reliable for all installed modules. Sometimes commands are missed by my software/controller set-up. I use the Insteon 2413U PowerLinc (USB) Controller with HomeSeer HS3 software and an additional 3rd party plug in. According to this software, 1 of 6 micro modules fails to receive a command 19% of the time. To be fair, the other 5 miss commands 0-2% of the time.

    2. As with all Insteon and Z-wave modules, you need an Insteon-specific controller to actually control the modules. There are non-software options out there for all three protocols: X-10, Insteon, and Z-Wave. Just check the Smarthome website for these types of devices. I have seen this listed as a complaint for Insteon devices, but it's not really a con for me.

    3. Unlike its Z-Wave counterpart, the Insteon module doesn't collect any energy usage data. I actually prefer the slightly larger Aeon Labs Z-wave module for this reason. With these I can actually tell if a switched device is in use based on the reported Watts used. This works well if you want to wire it in behind an outlet that controls a plasma TV, for example. For lights, though, the Insteon is great. You can tell the switches ON/OFF status remotely, which is enough for my lighting applications. Again, though, you have to have the software and controller to take advantage of these advanced features.

    4. Programming the device can get very complicated. If you stick to the defaults (, it's totally fine.

    5. The leads for the sensing wires are a joke. I think they're 26 gauge. I spliced them to some stranded 18 AWG copper wire and connected that to the switch. This is just much sturdier.

    6. For multi-way wiring (3-way switches), you need multiple modules. Insteon doesn't make cheaper auxillary or slave switches. Keep in mind you need hot, neutral, and a connection to the load for each installed Insteon module.

    7. It's not dual band for Insteon commands. It only transmits these commands over RF, which in most cases is a more reliable form of communication than over the power line. If you want to use an Insteon device to bridge your two (or three) electrical phases in your home, look for Insteon products labeled dual band. These will receive an RF signal and retransmit it over the powerline on the phase on which it's installed. This can be important if you have a lot of power line only Insteon devices that just aren't responding reliably. Insteon commands transmitted on one phase must go all the way back to the transformer outside your house before they are received by devices on the other phase. These signals are likely to degrade.

I'm using these with Indigo on my Mac. Two great uses for these are to automate existing older looking outlets and/or an existing push button light switches. This allows you to manually or through automation software turn the light on and off using the existing light switch. One thing I want to clarify is the sense feature works in the powered and unpowered positions meaning you can turn a light on or off in either direction of the switch depending on how the light was turned on. For example, if you turn the light on using home automation software and the toggle switch is in the down position, when you flick the light switch up (normally on) you are turning the light back off and vice versa.

This product is a total rip off! After having the system in place for years now they come back to me and tell me I have to BUY a subscription. Basically saying "We are greedy so we're going to make you PAY for a system that you already purchased" No where in the description of the product is it mentioned that you must use a subscription to reach mobile app or 3rd party devices. Do the research yourself and go to their website.

I have many Insteon products but not this so bought one of these just to see what it was capable of.

On the plus side, it does allow you to take almost any switch or device and make turn it off/on either from your smart phone or from other Insteon devices (you may need the Insteon hub to control it from your smart phone).

    On the minus side:
    1) while it is "micro" it's still large enough that it's always not easy to find room in electric boxes for it.
    2) It requires extra wires to make it work. With the Insteon switches all of the wires needed are already either in the electric box (assuming you are replacing an existing switch) or attached to the switch. For this product you'll need at least 2 extra wires (beyond the two already attached to the product).
    3) The two wires that do come with it are extremely thin and prone.
    4) It makes a small clicking noise when turned on/off which is loud enough to unsettle people not ready for it.

Although I've listed more negatives than positives for this product I can see a lot of good uses for it and it does work well. If you are replacing a switch I would recommend using one of the Insteon switches instead unless you have a compelling reason to keep the existing switch (such as it being an antique switch)

This was pretty simple to install other than trying to fit anything else into a gang box pretty much sucks. the module is about 1.5" by 1.5" if i remember right. I installed it on a three switch box on one of the switches.

I would only recommend this if 1) you want to keep the switch the same or 2) only are installing one. If those dont apply you might look to install the actual switch. Its about the same $ but you dont have to find room for this if you have more than one in the same box.

I ordered this as a direct replacement for the discontinued 2475S2 i used in my motion lights. I particularly liked the 2475S2's remote override the motion sensor by disabling the "sense" wire

Turns out it was not a direct replacement as the 2475S2 does not support sense override, when I consulted smarthome's support forum on how to deactivate my motion light the suggested I buy a 2nd device to use in conjunction or to have a script or program turn the light off every time it turns on

    Pros :
    Small

    Con's :
Sense wires too delicate (22 or 24 guage)
    No Sense override support
    Lower Wattage then previous device

Works good , however had to do some creative writing when it came to setting up on insteon. It runs my screen and the insteon system was seeing this as a safety issue ,I guess if it were a blind or something that could cause injury. Any how it's all good.
