Toshiba has created a SD card which seems to work almost seamlessly between my DSLR camera and my mobile devices. The card fitted in my DSLR like any other standard SD card and it emits a WIFI signal as soon as the camera is powered on. The connection process between the SD card and my mobile devices was quick and easy and with a few simple steps I was able to customise the network name and the password to my liking. The app is available in both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store for free, although there is some third party apps which are compatible. However the app currently isn't in the Windows Store for the Windows devices however my Microsoft Surface can connect to the SD card and the contents can be accessed via the web browser.

    As I am a photographer who is always on the go i need to be able to connect to my DSLR quickly and easily without the hassle of cables getting tangled or getting lost, to edit the photos i use Photoshop Touch as it is simple and it allows me to play around with the photos, this allows me to capture the photo, edit it and upload it to my social media sites in a matter of minutes. Finally we have the pro's and con's for the Toshiba FlashAir Wireless LAN SD Card;

    Pro's

    - The card is amazing easy to set up and is ready to use straight out of the box.
    - The pictures automatically transfers from the DSLR to the iPhone/iPad
    - This card defiantly beats its competitors in the market with its reliability

    Con's

    - The problem with WiFi SD cards is that they drain the battery extremely quickly on any DSLR camera
    - You should turn off the auto turn off on the camera so that you don't have to reconnect your device when the camera automatically turns off
    - The transfer time of a photo can take a while compared to the eye-fi card

My verdict is that the wireless SD card technology is revolutionary to photography and it has helped me a lot when I am on the go and I need to be able to access the photos especially when i am on a shoot with a client.

It's a very useful bit of kit if your camera isn't wifi enabled. My Nikon D3300 is not wifi enabled and you need to buy a bulky, expensive adapter to wifi enable it. They look rubbish sticking out the side of the camera and are an inelegant solution.

    Criticisms then:
    - you can't use your phone as a viewfinder (i.e. have the photos automatically show on your phone when you take them). You can do this with the Transcend card but it's not compatible with my camera.

    - once the photos are loaded to your phone (or PC or whatever you're wifi-ing it to), it takes a few seconds to load properly so you can see them clearly. This is a bit of a hassle, particularly if you want to quickly flick through numerous photos. 2 seconds isn't a long time to wait for one or two photos but it is if you've taken 50 odd and you want to see which are keepers!

    - when your phone connects to the wifi SD card, it disconnects from your internet wifi. Inevitable I suppose but still a little annoying as you have to switch between the 2. Also, it may auto connect to the SD card when you're trying to log back onto your internet.

    - downloading multiple photos/videos takes quite a long time. Again, not a problem for one or two photos but is an issue for numerous photos. This problem combines with my first criticism in that you can't circumvent the first problem by just quickly downloading the pics to your phone then swiping through (my phone swipes through photos very quickly)

    - the camera has to be on and (in my case at least) set to viewfinder mode. Slightly annoying on its own but actually a pain when you want to download numerous photos that you know is going to take several minutes - you have to leave your camera on the whole time in LCD viewfinder mode thus depleting the battery.

In spite of the above, I still give this 4 stars. For 20 odd quid, it's brilliant to have a massive SD that turns your camera into a wifi camera. That said, this feels like early stage 'beta' style tech and has some way to go.

In itself this is a very good product. I would recommend researching thoroughly how this product actually works and be certain it fits your requirements.

The companion application for iPhone was easy to set up, but it was a little buggy. Sometimes thumbnails didn't appear and on a couple of occasions I had to attempt to download a file twice. It didn't work very well with videos, if you're just using your camera to take pictures then you will be fine.

The ability to download images from my camera without a computer or a network was very useful, the SD Card creates a standalone Ad Hoc Access Point. There is an option to pass through a Network connection, the SD Card shares internet from another Wifi hotspot so that your iPhone can still access internet whilst you are downloading content from the SD Card. This really isn't a feature you will make much use of, and I didn't put it to the test so I'm unable to comment on it's reliability.

The SD Card only works whilst your camera is switched on, since it needs to draw power. That does mean that if your Camera is set to automatically go to sleep after a set period of inactivity you could find the download breaks mid transmission. It's not a big deal but you have to be constantly mindful of it. This is a common issue with these types of SD Cards, don't turn to an alternative product expecting better results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba flashair.
Reviewed in Italy on 25 December 2014

    Danke.
