Got one Microsoft Official Authentic Controller and (Unexpectedly) One Generic Controller

Got one Microsoft Official Authentic Controller and (Unexpectedly) One Generic Controller
I bought two of these used controllers. For one of them, I got what seems to be a Microsoft Official Authentic Xbox 360 Wired Controller for Windows and Xbox 360. The second one I bought, was clearly a generic wired controller. I was expecting to have both Microsoft Official Authentic Controllers but seems like the advertisement of this product here on Amazon contemplates: "Wired Xbox 360 Controller for Windows and Xbox 360", regardless of these being Microsoft Official Authentic or not. I would advise to read and pay attention to the different offers and descriptions of this product from different sellers. Some of them clearly state that it is a Microsoft Official Authentic Controller (Which elevates the price a little bit), while other sellers might not mention anything about it, which might make you think that the controller is not Microsoft Official Authentic, and of course, the price might be a little cheaper. The Microsoft Official Authentic Controller feels a little bit heavier, sturdy and robust, but a little bit lighter compared to the Microsoft Official Authentic Wireless Controllers that come with the official console Xbox 360. The authentic controller for Windows includes an USB Breakaway cable, which splits the cable in 2: From Controller to Microsoft Proprietary Port, and then from Microsoft Proprietary Port to USB Type A. It has stickers of authenticity on the back, buttons and sticks are black and has the X logo on the center Home Button. On the other hand, the generic controller is way more light, does not have authenticity stickers on the back, buttons, sticks and part of the body are grey, and the cable is 1 way continuous from controller directly to USB Type A. No breakaway cable. The cable does not get split in the middle. I have tested both controllers and both work great. No complains nor anything. I just wanted to contribute with my 2 cents about the experience I had buying the same item from 2 different sellers, as well as briefly compare the differences between a Microsoft Official Authentic Controller and a Generic one. Looking forward to use both controllers at their most! PS: I should have done better if I read the descriptions carefully.

I will begin this by stating that this is the official Xbox 360 wired remote, the same one that may come packaged with your Xbox 360, unless it comes with a wireless one. The only difference between this regular Xbox 360 controller, and this Xbox 360 Controller for Windows is one thing, the windows version comes packaged with a driver disk. Now this disk is unnecessary if your windows machine has access to the internet because windows will most likely recognize the device and install it for you. If not I recommend going to Microsoft's website and download the latest drivers, instead of using the disk.

I will not go into to much detail about the controller itself because most of use have been there done that. If you haven't used a 360 remote I will say though I prefer them over the PS3 style remote because it has a better grip(IMO) and the rear trigger buttons are a lot easier to use for pressure sensitive inputs because of the upward curve, compared to the downward curve. An example of where this comes in handy would be for light gas or brake pressure in a racing game. The quality is of course of high standards, this is not a cheaply built remote and you can expect this to last.

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING THIS REMOTE AND HAVE SOME MORE MONEY TO SPARE, I RECOMMEND FIRST CHECKING OUT Xbox 360 Officially licensed F.P.S. Pro Wired GamePad OR THE Razer Sabertooth Elite Gaming Controller for Xbox 360

**************** OPERATING SYSTEMS COMPATIBILITY TESTING ***************

      XBOX 360--
It will work like any other 360 remote, so no worries.

      PS3--
Doesn't function by itself, you must purchase an adapter like HDE® Xbox 360 To Playstation PS3 Controller Adapter but there are others on amazon you can purchase.

      Windows--
I have only tested this on windows 7, although it should work on xp,vista,7, and 8. On 7 it automatically installed my drivers so there was no need for the packaged driver disk. You will only need it, if you plan on playing with a pc which has no internet. If I get requests in my comments, I have no problem checking its compatibility in xp,vista, and 8.
I tested this on Steam and played a game which was fully controller compatible, borderlands 2. When I launched Steam Big Picture Mode, I was able to navigate through the menu's with the remote, and still use the mouse anytime i wanted to switch. Although I did have a small problem that my inputs weren't registering. Not sure what happened, but once I removed and reinserted the controller usb, everything worked fine. In game all the buttons worked perfectly and no mapping was needed.

      Linux(Ubuntu)--
Now that Steam has come to linux, it allowed me to actually take gaming on Linux serious LOL (sorry to people who actually enjoy the other games on linux). When I launched Steam, I clicked Big Picture mode and was surprised to see that it actually now worked. The controller worked without any type of software or driver installation. Big picture mode responded very well to all my inputs and was actually faster than the windows version. The only problem I had was that the buttons weren't mapped correctly, I didn't goto options and see if I could remap them, but there should be the settings to do so, if not it will get fixed automatically.
The game I tested was Team Fortress 2. This game is only partially controller compatible. I was able to navigate the games menu, but some buttons and the right analog stick didn't work. I tried remapping the buttons and still couldn't get it to work. But I know that as time passes and more linux games are released, it will work as it should. For now the important thing is that this microsoft remote will work in linux.

      Android--
I put this into my Asus Transformer Prime, which has a docking keyboard with USB, running Android 4.1. I plugged it in while on the home screen and was able to navigate through my icons, through the different screens, and even onto my apps menu. But although you have the ability to do this, its not optimal. It's much easier to use the touch screen because button mapping placement is odd and confusing.
The game I tested was Dead Trigger. Im not sure how much support they put into remotes but in the game menu the remote was worthless, and had to use the touchscreen. But once the game was loaded, I was able to play with the remote fully enabled. I remapped my buttons, and It was amazing. I hated using the onscreen buttons for gaming on my tablet, so I never played. But with a remote it completely changes gaming on an android device.

I've went through a number of gamepads over the years, dating back to when they connected to the PC via an analogue gameport. I've had pads from the likes of Thrustmaster, Saitek and a few others, most recently using a PS2 controller via a USB Adapter, which was far from ideal.

Over time, the layout of the Xbox 360 controller has become something of a standard for PC games that use a joypad. Many games already include mappings for the controller, and Steam's big picture mode more or less assumes that you're using one. I was looking for a new controller, so with all this in mind I decided to go for the wireless version of the gamepad for windows.

The last time I used an Xbox controller was on the original Xbox with one of the original humongous controllers. I don't have the smallest hands in the world, but that thing made them ache after an hour or so. Not so here; the controller is a nice size, the analogue sticks are positioned well in range of my thumbs, and the overall balance of the gamepad feels good. It also doesn't resort to any of that nasty grippy rubber paint that was all the rage not that long ago. That stuff doesn't last in a tropical climate, tuning into a sticky, messy goop that then has to be removed.

As others have mentioned, the Windows version of the pad uses AA batteries. Myself, I see this as a bonus. Instead of relying on a LiPo pack that may or may not survive more than a year's worth of use (I've heard really bad things about the kit that adds a Lithium battery to the controller) NiMh rechargeable AA's tend to be quite robust, and they're dirt cheap. If they were ever to die, replacements these days are about $1.50 apiece. Ever since low self-discharge cells became the norm, having them go flat by themselves is no longer an issue. Thank you Sanyo for your Eneloops and Amazon for your Amazon Basics AA's; I have a pile of both types at home.

The integration of the gamepad into Steam's big picture interface is impressive. Having it mapped to the Xbox 360 controller layout was a smart move on Valve's part as they were able to concentrate on the on-screen prompts being consistent, etc. It makes me wonder how SteamOS will be once it launches.

Software-wise, the gamepad ships with next to nothing. A driver CD is supplied, which installs drivers and little else. This is the source of the controller's greatest failing; unless you're playing a Games for Windows Live game (hereby referred to as GfWL), there is no way supplied to turn the controller off once you're done. It supposedly turns itself off after a short period of inactivity, but I've heard that can be unreliable (I'm testing this at the moment, and it's yet to turn itself off since I started writing this review). Many resort to disconnecting the batteries once they're done to turn the controller off, which is a workable (if clunky) solution.

If this were what we were stuck with, I'd have docked a star, perhaps 2 for this alone. It doesn't detract from the gamepad while in use, but it's an annoyance that seems doubly odd given a mechanism exists to explicitly turn the gamepad off from software, but that software isn't provided with the gamepad to cover all eventualities. Only the abomination that is GfWL gets that level of control.

Thankfully, the community at large had a bit of a poke about, and the "Xbox360 Controller Manager" was born. This is a little tool that sits quietly in your system tray and responds to a long press of the guide button (the silver button in the middle) with a prompt to turn that controller off. The tool itself takes single-digits of MB of memory, which is background noise in this day and age.

For those of you that haven't already discovered this essential little piece of software, you can get it here:

      http://pety.me/XboxExt/

Save it wherever, add a shortcut in your "Startup" start menu folder, and then forget about it. Using it will become second nature, and you'll forget that it's a 3rd-party application. Honestly, this utility removes the one problem I had with the gamepad, and does it so effectively that I can't help but wonder why Microsoft didn't ship it with something similar.

Overall, I highly recommend this. The biggest niggle I had with it was solved by its users, and if you're looking for a wireless controller for Windows, there really isn't any reason not to get one.

P.S. I'm done with this review, and the controller still hasn't turned itself off. Thankfully, there's an app for that...

I switched from XBox360 over to PC gaming a while back and took the controller with me. After many years of (ab)use, it was time to replace it. I checked out a few options, all of which gave me problems of one kind or another, and settled for going back to basics with one of these. It came with a driver disc, which is always appreciated, and everything works like it should. No problems, no hassle, and it's lets me get back to what's important - brain surgery from 200 feet.

      * INCLUYE EL RECEPTOR INALAMBRICO!!! (Original obviamente)
      * Incluye baterías aunque sugiero el uso de recargables por cuestión de comodidad y protección al planeta
      * El receptor que incluye sirve hasta para 4 controles o para otros accesorios como volantes de Microsoft, etc.
      * Aunque incluye disco de instalación, sólo con conectarlo a la PC se instalan los controladores rápidamente.
      * Funciona con celulares Android sin problemas sólo consigue un USB OTG y listo
      * Construcción de primera (No como los controles recientes que vienen muy chafas)
      * Precio
      * Funciona con Xbox 360

      CONTRAS:
      * Revisen con Microsoft la garantía porque no siempre es válida al comprar en amazon ya que los productos los traen de USA.
      * Al ser vendido por Amazon USA no se pueden tramitar facturas

A fantastic and original Microsoft product. Check for Amazon Fulfilled to ensure that you get the original one. The installation process is very easy. Just run the software CD you get with the box first. Then, after it's installed, restart the PC. Now, connect the controller with your USB port and you are set to use it. If you are using Windows 10, that's it; plug and play. If you aren't using Windows 10 then you would have to make some changes in your device manager in order for the system to detect your controller (there are sites and videos in the internet to help you with that). The product itself is great and fantastic to play games with.
