pHAT DAC

by Pimoroni

If music be the food of love, play on. But make sure you use this super little DAC to get the best out of your Raspberry Pi audio!

This pHAT provides a super affordable high-quality DAC for your Raspberry Pi. It pumps out 24-bits at 192KHz from the Raspberry Pi's I2S interface on its 2x20 pin GPIO header.

Use pHAT DAC to build a tiny, lush-sounding streaming music device, or use it with Scroll pHAT to make a beautiful spectrum analyser!

Features

  • 24-bit audio at 192KHz
  • Line out stereo jack
  • Optional landing for dual RCA phono connector
  • PCM5102A DAC over the Raspberry Pi's I2S interface
  • pHAT DAC pinout
  • Compatible with all 40-pin header Raspberry Pi models
  • Female header requires soldering

Software

pHAT DAC doesn't require a Python library like most of our other HATs and pHATs, but does require configuration to work properly. We've put together a slick one-line installer to get everything set up just right. See the tutorial here for more details.

Notes

The kit has a 3.5mm stereo jack pre-assembled but doesn't include a dual RCA phono connector. If you need one then grab it here.
N.B. Pi, micro SD card and Pibow case not included.

Received my pHAT DAC in very good time. Soldiered the header on and off I went. Using my pi 3 as a Bluetooth audio player through an old amp and speakers and the Dac made the sound quality quite a lot better then the standard phono output on the pi 3

I've got a couple of these and I think they sound great for the price. Soldering the connector was easy and I also bought the photo sockets, which were easy to solder in too. I had to set one pHAT DAC up but the installer was easy to use. The other one is used with Volumio as a media player so Volumio handled the set up even easier!

It's very easy to set up if one can solder. At first, sound output seemed to be cheep, but the reason was bad sound sources. I installed pHAT DAC with Volumio2 and tested with internet radio, that's why sound didn't seem to good. And a little ageing proceeding resulted beter sound. After all, I prepared my digital music sources and used them, I could satisfy enough. Using Spotify on Volumio2 is satisfactory too, though not to be supported offline playback is a little sad. There are more other fantastic devices in the world, pHAT DAC has a very good balance in spite of its price.

This little DAC alongside a Pi Zero W, PiCorePlayer and a subscription to Spotify Premium is breathing new life in to my old but decent HiFi. Sound quality is excellent. In truth its exceeded my expectations, and is proving well worth the small outlay to put this together. Cheap as chips (almost), Love it's diminutive dimensions and the possibility of scattering more of these around the house. Simply brilliant.
