Amazing stuff. Don't cheap out!

Amazing stuff. Don't cheap out!
I had to solder after not doing so for over 10 years. The last time was to fix a guitar and this time was the same, so I'm not very experienced. I bought a good iron station but I cheaped out and bought 1.5oz of Maiyum here. What a mistake. I ruined two sets of pots because I couldn't make good joints. They'd hold, but they were rough and jagged because it would literally cool as I lifted the iron. It would then be sort of waxy, which meant it stuck to the iron and the pools were never smooth as a result. It also turned grey and hazy after cooling, even after tinning the tip and turning the iron off. I finally wised up and bought this. Yes, for the same $8 I only got half an ounce, but it was worth it. It flows instantly and consistently and while it cools quickly of course, I have enough time to completely remove the iron before it does so, so it's not sticking to the iron, which means you get nice smooth joints. It also dries shiny, the sign of a good solder joint. The other great thing about this stuff is it doesn't have much of a smell. The Maiyum gave me headaches and I felt like I smelled like the fumes and it stunk up the house. So do you pay more for less? Yes. But it makes soldering enjoyable and ultimately saves you money when you don't ruin parts by using crappy Chinese solder. The picture I attached shows a tip tinned and cooled with the Kester (left) and one with the Maiyum (right). You can clearly see the difference.

This small solder package is perfect.... As long as you are using it for what it was intended. This product is really perfect for small jobs, typically electronic in nature. It is a rosin core solder (not acid core..) so there is little concern when using for electric or electronic projects. I use it for joining electrical wires mostly... or wires to contacts. One of the nice things about this product is the small diameter. It can be used for small jobs or soldering in small spaces. There is quite a lot of solder in this package too, enough for multiple projects.

I like Kester products. Their solder has never failed me. It flows beautifully and holds well. No issues. I would much rather pay a little more for something like this, than pay a little less and fight with product.

The only complaints I have heard about this solder relates to the price. Really..???? $5.95 for a tube that will last for a long time and complete several projects (well, unless you are soldering entire circuit boards or building a computer from scratch..). Frankly, I can't see the issue. I spend more than that sometimes for a cup of coffee...(and you do too if you ever stop at Starbucks or any other beanery...)...

Five stars. Excellent product. Easy to use. No issues.

    Worked well

I've never been particularly good at soldering but I could do basic jobs like tinning wire and soldering components such as capacitors and resistors, etc. But when I started soldering again, I was flabbergasted by how poor I was despite owning a decent temperature-controlled iron. I literally had trouble tinning a piece of wire. Every job I attempted was a lesson in frustration. I tried everything I could think of: turned up the temperature of the iron, used flux, etc, but I just couldn't get the solder to flow and adhere to the components. Finally, I narrowed it down to the solder I was using. I had bought it from a local hardware store in a rush so hadn't really considered the quality. I ordered the Kester off Amazon, and low and behold, all my problems disappeared and I was soldering like a seasoned professional. Jobs that previously took me a lifetime now took seconds. I can't recommend this solder enough.

I mainly solder electrical and audio wiring. When the hand-me-down and "found on sale" solder in my kit had ran out, I asked my Father what he would buy. He's been soldering circuit boards since the 70's. "Kester, everything else is junk."
Facts. I found the Kester to be very "agreeable" with both solid and stranded wiring. Excellent melting and wicking action. I will stick with this brand and may get a larger roll one day.

As a hobbyist that usually uses whatever is available at the moment, or whatever happens to be cheapest, I was skeptical in spending so much money on so little solder; however, I have to admit I was extremely surprised to see how big of a difference this particular solder makes.

It flows silky smooth on my soldering stations lowest setting, and provides a beautiful solder join while being extremely easy to use.

The tube design, while allowing less solder than a traditional spool, provides a pleasant way to deliver solder to your project. I found it especially handy when soldering pin headers, as it allows you to get nice and close to your project while still retaining complete control over how much solder you need at the time.

Kester's solder really shines in it's quality however, and I have never been this amazed, and so pleasantly surprised, by a purchase that I had never considered as important as it turned out to be.

Think your terrible at soldering? Use this solder and then get back to me. A great soldering iron is important to do quality soldering work but solder is just as important. I will never use anything else...EVER. This solder makes all the difference in the world. I work on guitar pedals and guitars and with pedals, the joints are really small and you can’t have heat on the pcb for long. With this stuff, there’s no messing around. It bonds very quickly and very cleanly and the joints look amazing. For $3.20, how can you go wrong? You can’t!
