Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I'm writing this because the majority of the reviews for this thing was written by some major galaxy brains. I bought this for a windows 98 machine that I like to play old DOS games on. The problem I had was the ps/2 port on my mobo is blocked by the case. It happens to have a nice 5 pin ps/2 header though. Now this is wired for some 2x5 connector which obviously wont work. This is where the problem comes in for most of the people reviewing this product. All you have to do is look at a pinout of a female ps/2 and wire this thing accordingly. You also don't need to buy 2 and dissemble 1 to see where the wires go. Get a multi meter, genius. Re-wiring the dupont connector is very simple. You can remove each wire by lifting the little black tabs with a needle and the wire comes right out. It's very simple if you use your brain. Any way this thing worked out perfectly after I painlessly re-wired it for my machine. No more serial ball mice for me. 10/10 would buy and review again.
With small modification, I was able to use this to connect to an old Pentium 120MHz board that had no exposed PS/2 ports. What a lucky thing that startech makes this obscure piece of hardware that saved me the trouble of having to buy a connector, drill a case panel, and solder a connector header.
Three stars, because as others have noted, the wiring is wrong. But I couldn't find any other slot PS/2 like this. It's pretty easy to pull the contacts from the plug using a small screwdriver. I used a 8 pin connector instead of the 10 pin it came with to connect it to my motherboard. On my adapter, the wiring was as follows, but you best measure yourself: red - gnd green - vcc brown - data yellow - clk
I needed this part for a project of mine and it was great that I could purchase it through Amazon. I checked with all local stores to see if anyone still carried this connector with no luck. The connector is of good quality and was perfect for my project.
Pin-Out is nonstandard, meaning you will have a fried mouse if you plug it into this. Nearly impossible to open the clamshell header to redo the pinout too, ended up going serial trackball for that machine.
I'm not sure if the one I received was even from star-tech, it was in a unbranded bag from one of the amazon market sellers.
Had to buy 2 of them to get the pin out right to hook into an old motherboard I had. At least they could of put a paper what each color wire does. I litterly had to break one of them to wire the second one.
I see a lot of complaints about the non-standard pinout, PS/2 headers were never standardized. So with a tiny flathead you can rearrange them as needed. I'm using it on a shuttle Hot-569 supersocket 7. As posted in a few reviews the wire colours of the bracket are as follows: red - gnd, brown - data, yellow - clock, green - +5V(VCC)
You'll need to find your motherboards pinout to arrange them properly, the Shuttle Hot-569(A) are as follows Starting at the edge of the mobo 1-Data, 2-Not connected, 3-Ground, 4-VCC(+5v), 5-Clock
I hope this info helps, it's a perfect product as far as I'm concerned, I love that us retro PC Gamers can still find these.
I bought this to use with an old AT motherboard's PS/2 mouse header. However, I'm not sure there was ever a true "standard" for these headers. So before using this, make sure you check your motherboard manual for the pinout. I had to swap a couple of pins around on mine to work with my motherboard.
