    Just What I Needed
Sometimes you get in that DIY mood and need a component. I'm pleased to say this one works like a charm. To hook it up, I went by another reviewer's wiring diagram I screenshotted. The smaller guage wires were tough to adhere to the screw connections but eventually went on. Two facts to note about this switch that other reviewers might not have mentioned: 1) The pieces are not strongly magnetized, only enough to activate the switch via magnet. So you won't struggle to use this product on whatever project you have planned. 2) There is a very faint "click" when the switch is activated. I looked to this item when I wanted to have LED's come on when I open my mobile clothes chest. And I've gotta say, I'm glad instead of cheaper options I chose Amazon's.

I'm leaving similar review for each component in my project, so you might see it copy-pasted on the other pages. I purchased these lights (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HSF66JO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00) to replace an old fluorescent light in my pantry that was on a light switch. I used this magnetic switch so the lights come on when the pantry door opens and turn off when the door shuts. To wire this, I cut the wire between the transformer box and the LED strip. I just reconnected the red wires off the bat (you only need to mess with the black wire so if you can cut the cable without cutting the red wires, even better, but I don't know how you'd do that). Actually, polarity doesn't matter with this switch because its all about disrupting the circuit, so you can choose to reverse what I just said about red and black, and it still works. Either way, I had the cut ends of the black wire...the black wire coming from the transformer side got connected to the COM port of the magnetic switch, and the black wire from the LED light strip side got connected to the NC port on the magnetic switch. This frustrated me immensely initially because my first switch was bad and I didn't know it right away. Finally checked it with a voltmeter and confirmed it was not functional (touching the magnets or separating them made no difference as to what the voltmeter read). Returned to Amazon, got the replacement...two days later I completed the project with a new functional switch. The wired side of the magnetic switch is mounted on the top of the door frame and the other side is mounted to the door itself (both with just the mounting tape it came with). When the door opens and the two parts are then separated, the switch is activated and the lights come on. It isn't even touchy at all, "on and off" are totally reliable. For all the details of the project, find my review for the LED lights (same review title).
Why 5 stars when my first one was bad, frustrated me, and needed to be returned? Because the return process was great. The replacement arrived within 2 days, no joke - 2 days!, and I was able to finish the project.
The finished product looks and works great. Lots of bright light in the pantry and the light is no longer accidently left on all day.

I would give this 4.9 stars if I could. The reason for a 4.9 and not a full 5 star is because you have to be pretty accurate with both magnets. They must be aligned directly infront one another and they cannot be more that 1.5in apart or the switch won't work. But once you have the alignment issue down these are amazing. I installed one for a storage closet light. I have it wired to always close. So once the door is open and the magenets are seperated the light comes on. When the door is close and the magnets are together the light is off. I also installed this in the glove box of my car. Same setup. When the glove box is open the light is on and when the glove box is closed the light is off. So i wired it to always closed (NC).

You can replace the regular magnet piece (the magnet without the wiring) with a stronger magnet for the switch to work at a bit further space. Instead of the 1.5in soace you can get it up to 3in to work. I tried my phone mount magnet which is probably three times stronger and the distance from which the switch activated was around 3.5in - 4in

NC - Normally Closed. Meaning once the two magnets are sperated the circuit is closed and power is sent from one pole to the next. Resulting the switch being on. When the two magnets are together or directly in front one another, the circuit is open or disrupted and zero power is sent from one pole to the next. Resulting the switch being off.

NO - Normally Open. Basically the opposite of NC. Meaning when the two magnets are directly in front on another the circuit is closed and power is sent from one pole to the next. Resulting the switch being on. But when the magnets are separated the power is disrupted abd power is not sent from one pole to the other. Resulting in the switch being off.

Installation advice: Do Not Remove The Double Sided Tape First!! You should wire your switch up and test it first to make sure everything work as its suppose to. Now get some regular tape and take the two magnets in the spots where you would like to position the magnets. Turn on the power and test the magnets to see if they align and work correctly. Now remove the double sided tape and stick the magnets to the locations you tested on. This worked best for me. These magnets are very sensitive when aligning them. But they are worth the extra couple of seconds because they work well and have both NC and NO which are rare to find in stores today on one switch.
