As bright as a headlight

- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2011This seems to be a pretty well designed light. Doesn't change modes when it hits bumps as some I've owned have done. Both flash modes are very good and quite visible in the daytime from a distance.
I think this product could be improved with a waterproof seal (weird they didn't add that since PDW is in very wet Portland)and a snap together body instead of having to use a Phillips to change batteries. Can't guess how it might hold up if it gets caught in heavy rain, but we'll see.
The on/off button shown here is red, but the one on mine is black. The red is a better idea, maybe white (or glow in the dark) would be even better since this is going to be used at night.
Comes with a fender mount, and two sizes of tube mounts. Easy to clip in place and remove from the mounts.
Update Mar 2012: Having used two of these (on my bike and my wifes)for over a year now, I can attest to the usefulness and reliability. No issues, although I have still not been caught in a heavy rain yet with them. We became aware of the availability of different flash patterns when my buddy put two on his commuter bike. My wife also has a Planet Bike Turbo (1 Watt) on her bike. The Radbot seems a bit brighter to me. Also I found the fender mount that came with the Radbot fits the Turbo flash perfectly, in case you have both. We also have found that the Radbot, because of its narrow beam, is also fine for group riding if mounted low on the bike ahead of you.
On pissing off drivers: Because the brightest part of the beam on the Radbot is narrow, it only causes eye discomfort if the cars are failing to move left before they get closer than about 100 feet. If they aren't moving left by then YOU should be pissed. On another note, when I rode with my K2 headlight (about 140 lumens) I used to have a lot of cars approaching in front, turn on their high beams, I guess to see what I was. Really pissed ME off, since it blinded me. But since I got a Magicshine (1000 lumens)they don't do this anymore. I guess they figure I'm a motorcycle. Light is your friend, stop worrying about pissing off jerks, they're already pre-pissed. If someone runs you over on purpose thats called murder. If they run you over because you don't have good lights, thats called you being stupid. Stop thinking of yourself as a victim, stand up for your right to be safe.

It is a 1-watt LED with a large reflector below the light which gives additional visibility when approaching-from-behind car's headlights hit it. This one-two combo, a super bright flashing 1-watt LED and reflector gives it a significant edge compared to other bike lights. I also want to mention that the reflector acts as some sort of insurance that in the event your batteries die on you mid-ride in low or no daylight situations, you will still have some visibility as soon as approaching headlights hit the reflector. That is significant fail-safe mechanism in my opinion, at least in dusk to night situations.
Powered by 2-AAA batteries, you can expect about 30 hours of operation according to Portland Design Works but if you use non-rechargable alkaline batteries you will likely see the light lasting up to 50 hours or more in zZz Pop mode. That's what I get. Running the light in steady on mode will greatly reduce your battery life to about 12 hours (according to Portland Design Works. I never use that mode so couldn't advise you on that.)
It comes with a variety of mounting hardware that makes it convenient to mount, either on the back of a seat bag, or attach it to the seatpost or seatstay. Whatever works best for you.
Compared to the PlanetBike Blinky Superflash Planet Bike Blinky Superflash Tail Light which uses a 1/2 watt LED, the Radbot 1000 provides twice the light. The Planet Bike Superflash is nice because of the additional 2-LED's that flash opposite the strobing 1/2 watt LED, but in lieu of the 2 additional LED"s the Radbot 1000 offers a large reflector.
They are comparable in price but there is a slight size difference and obvious brightness difference. Both are quite visible but the Radbot is both brighter and a bit larger. I like the actual button on the Radbot as it makes it easier to select modes and turn on & off.
The Superflash is a worthy light but the Radbot 1000 deserves your consideration as well. Both are great.
UPDATE: 1/8/2011: Portland Design Works has created a lot of confusion by first eliminating the zZz Pop mode from the Radbot 1000 and replacing it with the zZz, mode due to complaints from people who felt that the light was "off" for too long of a period of time. Now people are complaining about the mode that replaced it so Portland Design Works is going back to the zZz Pop mode. Unfortunately, as the Rep told me, there are now both versions out in the marketplace and there is no way to know which one you are going to get. So if this concerns you, you may want to order directly from Portland Design Works website to be sure you get what you think you ought to get.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2012Does exactly what you want it to, makes you be seen. I bought it because it was cheaper than a superflash and i liked the zzz pop pattern. It definitely looks brighter than my roommates superflash, and that means is there is no brightness issue cos superflashes are already really bright! I believe them when they say it's the same led from a car. Haven't done any extensive testing but the mount seems sturdy enough and the light is super bright. Comes with 3 mounts, seatpost, seat stay, and fender. Only thing that isn't great about that is they only give you one bolt you can either use for the seatpost or seat stay so you can't use it on multiple bikes. I would have rather paid .20 more to have that extra bolt included, as it's not a standard reflector bolt size so i'll be digging through the bins at the hardware store. At the same time, it gets the job done and I think it's a much better and brighter light than others in its price range, that's why i bought it! Def recommend. Also this seller was awesome, i ordered it at 11pm and selected local delivery and it arrived at 7pm the next day. Crazy fast! Prob depends where you live but it was great. Anyway, if this is in your budget or even slightly above, it's worth it. I've gone through many cheap lights and you end up spending more in the end with them cos they keep breaking so get a decent one! My front light has lasted me years bc i got a good one (knog bullfrog.. dont recommend the rear one tho... not very bright and cant adjust angle on seatpost) Hopefully that helps out someone! good luck
Update : The mounts broke quickly but light itself is still bright and working perfectly 8 years later . I’ve been putting it on bags and waistbands for that long and it somehow hasn’t fallen off so I guess the clip works well enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top qualité !

5.0 out of 5 stars A blinding little light! ;)
I am very happy with this light, it is very bright and as I work late shifts and live out in the sticks, visibility is crucial.
The design is great. Due to my own laziness, I didn't bother to read the instructions and at first I couldn't get it to switch on. So it is my own stupid fault that I had sore eyes for a couple of hours after looking directly into it as I did work out that you need to hold the button down for a couple of seconds. This shouldn't put you off, it's a good design feature as it is less likely to switch itself on if you have it in your bag/pocket. Just don't do what I did!
Great value for money, good quality. I would recommend this to anyone cycling on dark lanes/roads at night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente.
Es una luz trasera muy brillante y bien construida, ya veremos que tal gasta baterías pero usando recargables no creo que haya problema...muy recomendada y el envío llegó un día antes de lo marcado!
- Steve FieldReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2012
5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT !!....in every sense of the word !!
After using a half watt Smart light for the last two years which i liked very much it finally gave way.....upon searching around i came upon the Radbot 1000.......An absolutely stunning rear light that is so much more visible...not just at night but also in daylight increasing your visibility to other road users tenfold.........especially in all the wet rainy days we have been getting of late.
I fully recommend this light and would advise anyone looking for a rear light to choose this one...you won't be dissapointed at all, the construction and durability is top notch and with the added bonus of having a built in reflector also means it conforms to road safety standards, rules and regs regarding cycle lights.
