They measure 1x1" at the top and taper to about .75" at the base, seem to be about 1.5" tall. They do seem to crumble easily; I separated them by slicing with a knife rather than tearing and had no problem.
These are perfect for what I needed them for. I have a countertop hydro garden and the planting sponges that came with it are expensive to replace at $20 for 60. I was hoping these would work instead and they absolutely do! They are the right size for a countertop hydro garden and at a fraction of the price of the other sponges. I’ve planted in these now and they work great. I even like them better than the brown sponges because those tend to get green on the top while this rock wool has not. The hole in these is larger than the others but it didn’t effect how they work and would be better for anything with larger seeds. I put kale in them and they all germinated. They broke apart very easily with no tearing, I broke them apart while dry and did not soak them.
Purchase to germinate seeds for aeropods. I have trays for these where I'll separate these out into the trays and germinate the cells under a grow light. These are perfect fit for aeropods. I germinated first in the trays then I transferred these onto some 3D printed the seed trays for the aeropod garden that I have. These fit right in.
Some tips: - You need to trim these a bit so that they fit into the aeropod. The pod isn't a square so just remove the corners (easy to rip off). - Stuff them down as into the pod if you can (very easy).
I've had no issues having the roots grow out of these starter sponges so it does its job well
Work well, BUT BE SURE TO WEAR Gloves or something , I made e mistake of not AMD touch my chest, it’s like insulation so it’s an extremely easy irritate for me. But good product, seeds have sprouted !
Though this product was as described, I wasn't as happy as I thought I would be. Perhaps I was used to the 1.5x1.5" ones I previously got at the local grow store. These tip easily with even small clones and are tapered at the top so are even smaller than 1" at the top. The packaging was sufficient enough but questionably done so with cut up ubused USPS priority boxes (item was not shipped priority) and packaging tape that stuck to the product.
After soaking and adjusting the PH, I took it out of the water and a couple of the pods started to fall apart. Overall, you get what you pay for and I have had some plants grow. Next time, I will spend the extra money and buy better quality.
I had never seen these before but I wanted to start growing basil indoors. I watched a youtube video about propagating basil from clippings and the man in the video used these. I was so excited to start growing basil and I waited over a week and a half for these to arrive. More than half of them were cracked apart due to poor packaging. They arrived in a mailing envelope with nothing to prevent bending and squishing. I managed to salvage some and got started on my basil. I cut them into 4-cell blocks and transferred my clippings into the holes. I also tried to start some from seed. I purchased a humidity dome like in the video and I followed every step to the letter. I patiently waited to see roots come through the bottom, but nothing. The plants looked healthy, green and strong. I finally, after weeks of babying these clippings and seeds, decided to pull one out to have a look-see at how the root system was developing. To my surprise, I found only rotted ends, no roots. And after weeks, my seeds hadn't even germinated. I decided to simply put the clippings into a cup of water so I snipped off the rotted ends and placed them in water. I am now getting roots. Needless to say, I threw these in the trash. What a waste of time and money.
These are pretty small but I like the bare minimum for my seedlings. I don't like the bigger squares since they start to form algae if too much light hits them. These will hopefully work the way I need them to. (Support the seeds long enough to get good roots established).
