With an Adapter or Mod it's perfect for the MiSTer FPGA

With an Adapter or Mod it's perfect for the MiSTer FPGA
I found with ether an adapter or a little modification, this power supply works well with the DE 10 Nano FPGA Development board. Perfect with anyone who interested in the MiSTer Project. What I did was I slowly pry apart the switch housing, I can desolder the micro USB cable and solder on a cable with a 5.5mm x 2.1mm DC power plug. Make sure you wire up your DC plug for Center positive, as that is what polarity the DE 10 Nano needs.

I purchased a couple of these NORTHPADA power supplies with built-in switches, to power a bluetooth transmitter and receiver pair I use for my outdoor audio system. The bluetooth devices have their own power buttons, but they're "push and hold"-types that don't have a positive feel, and there are no indicator lights on them, to confirm "on/off" status. These power supplies terminate in micro USB connectors- exactly what my devices use, provide 5-volt, 3-amp outputs- so my devices don't starve for power, and the built-in "on/off" button not only positively "snaps", but also features a red LED indicator to definitively indicate status. It's worth pointing out that the power buttons on these supplies are most convenient, when the device you're using them with will remain switched on, if the power to the device is cut. Otherwise, you'll find yourself turning on the power supply, and then turning on the device, too. Overall, these supplies are great. I've had mine plugged in for months now, and they're still going strong.

An electrically "clean" power source for my older Pi 3 units as well as the new 2018 Pi 3. The ON/OFF switch needs to be used carefully, of course: It is a "dumb" switch. We still need to make sure that NO processing is occurring on our Pi units before turning power OFF. And it is only turning off power to the Pi - if you leave the wall wart plugged in to AC, you are still using electricity (minimally, of course ... but just think of the MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of wall warts plugged in while not in use ... each wasting a wee bit of energy. But I digress (grin). Nice product, the switch is right where you'd want it to be - about 4 inches from the plug, so as not to "interfere" with accessing other plugs/jacks - NO accidental button presses should occur.

I have been contending with low voltage indications on the RASPI 3B+ for a long time. Tried many solutions, various 110 to 5 volt supplies, buck power supply 12 to 5 V 5A and variable supply. Feeding through the connector and directly to the GPIO 5V pin. Nothing worked until I tried this supply. It works great. No lightning bolt, or low voltage warning. I was sceptical with all that had been tired before but this works and let's me know the issue is voltage related and not a bad pi. So now the goal is to power it from a 12 volt battery to 5 V and complete my weather station.

Works great for my raspberry pi 3 b +. I'm using this to power the pi, which is being used as an arcade setup. This adapter powers the raspberry pi, which in turn powers two sets of arcade-player controls connected to the pi via USB, and does this all adequately. I no longer ever see the low power indicator in the upper right screen or in text at boot up.
As a bonus (and I haven't seen any other review mention it or the product description mention it also) but my adapter also came with a full metal body for the top and underside of the pi 3 b+ with built in fans and thermal adhesive for joining the chips with the metal body for emissivity! This was an excellent bonus, and at this price combined with the adapter, I kinda wondered if they accidentally added these extras to my adapter order.....

After seeing so many reviews saying that this solved the under-voltage warning in addition to reviews saying it would power the Pi and the 7" touchscreen at the same time, I ordered a 2 pack of these to use for a couple of projects. It turned out I needed both of them to power just one Pi+touchscreen pair. I dinged it 1 star for this little surprise gotcha. I still gave it 4 stars because it is actually a decent wall wart which produces surprisingly clean power for the price.

*** In summary, I popped on here today to warn others that during my tests I was unable to power both a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and the 7-inch touchscreen without getting the under-voltage warning.

Take note that I'm talking specifically about the >>> Pi 3 B+ <<<, not the Pi 3 or even the Pi 3B. I'm also talking about powering both the touchscreen and the Pi 3 B+ from a single wart. With one wart powering both the measured voltage dropped down to 5.1 volts and I had the low voltage warning on the display. I tested the Pi 3 B+ without the touchscreen connected and there was no warning. The voltage measured 5.22 volts without the screen. I was slightly annoyed that it wouldn't power both, but since I had purchased 2 of these anyway, I plugged 1 into the Pi 3B+ and 1 into the touchscreen. By using 1 wart for each, it ran perfectly with no warning icon. Once I had the screen on a separate wart, I was even able to add a HifiBerry Dac Pro+ to the Pi 3 B+ without getting the warning icon. (I admit I was surprised that 5.1 volts triggers the low voltage warning. Seems odd to me.)

So, from my personal experience with this unit, if you are planning to use the Pi 3 B+ with the official 7" touchscreen, you should buy a 2 pack of these power supplies and expect to use both simultaneously in order to get rid of the low voltage warning. In my own case, I'm still looking for a single power wart that will power both. I'll probably hook it up to my bench power supply to find out exactly what voltage and current the combination needs while under a heavy workload in order to prevent the low voltage warning.

Tip for using two warts at once: Don't connect the power jumper wires or the USB power jumper between the Pi and the screen PCB. Just plug one wart into the micro USB socket on each board individually. I use a power strip to turn both on at once, but powering the screen up before the Pi would also likely work fine. Turning the Pi on first might cause the Pi to not configure the screen properly because it may not see the unpowered screen during boot, although I haven't verified this.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more lightning bolts
Reviewed in Canada on November 4, 2022
When using my Raspberry Pi 3b+ I kept getting "lightning bolt" icon on the upright corner of the screen, meaning not enough power. I tried different power supplies, without success -- even another one that claimed to be 3A. This power supply seems to work well and deliver the required Amps. No more lightning bolts and my Raspberry Pi is running smoother now. The little power-button is so helpful, so I don't have to bother plugging and unplugging the power. Just use the button.

I bought this to use with my Pi 3 B because my other power supply wasn’t powerful enough to run the RTL-SDR dongle, with warnings about low voltage coming up. No chance of that now! Works well, no issues.
