Not as efficient as full size AC box fan and more versatile when running off solar.
    4 out of 5 stars
Not as efficient as full size AC box fan and more versatile when running off solar.
I did a simple test running a run of the mill 120V AC box fan against this compact 12 volt specialty box fan running off a Jackery "Lithium battery generator with inverter" and a Renogy "100 watt" solar suitcase. The solar panel output was connected directly to the Jackery "generator" bypassing the Renogy controller. There is some power loss due to the conversion from 12 volts to 120 volts AC via the inverter suggesting that the Fan-Tastic 12 volt fan should be more efficient running directly off the 12 volt socket on the Jackery Lithium battery pack than the 120 volt AC fan running off the built in Jackery inverter. However, the improved efficiency of the larger fan blades on the full sized 120v AC box fan seemed to compensate for the loss of power running through the inverter. With the solar panels generating about 45 watts of power, I ran the 120 AC box fan at all three fan speeds. I saw a power drain at all AC three fan speeds loosing about 18 watts at high power. I then ran the same test using the compact Fan-Tastic 12 volt fan. At the lowest 12 volt fan setting I saw a positive battery charge of about 5 watts. So, in summary, at higher speeds it seems like a toss up between the 120v full size box fan running off an inverter and the compact 12v Fan-Tastic fan running off the 12v port of the Jackery "power generator." The advantage of the compact 12v fan is its smaller size for camping and the ability to run the fan at low speed leaving some power to charge the Jackery lithium battery when running off a Renogy solar suitcase. If you only intend to run a fan at moderate to full power off a Jackery "generator," the less expensive full size 120v AC box fan running off the 12 volt inverter may be a better purchase. Your efficiency results may vary if you are running an inverter 24X7 as the inverter may consume power when the fan is not in use. The Jackery inverter in this test is internal to the Jackery "lithium generator" and is easily switched off when not needed.

After reading all the reviews on this fan I came away with this general conclusion. It is a high price fan compared to other 12v fans but it does move significantly more air than the lower price ones and is fairly low on energy usage. Sound level will be about that of an air conditioner fan. Good built frame, chinzy fold out fan legs.
I decided for my application this was all acceptable and what I was looking for so I bought it. Here are the results: It does make about as much noise as an air conditioner fan on the low and medium settings so if you are sensitive to white noise this fan may not do it for you. The reality is these fans are designed with a radiator fan motor so yes they will be noisier and have a slight whine to them, if they designed a 12v fan to the standard 120v hosehold fans it would be even more expensive. In terms of build quality I agree the "legs" on the fan do feel a little flimsy but if you just take the time to genly twist them and set the fan down gently they will last just fine. If you are rough handling the fan then don't be surprised if they break. The enclosure itself is pretty durable and the fan blades appear to be light clear plastic but if you don't stick anything in the fan they will be just fine. They do appear thin considering the amount of air they move but I use this fan in a van when I am staying overnight fishing on a lake and it makes it comfortable in the van. I can put it on a small table next to the bed, put it on low, and have it blow on me and sleep all night in 85 degree weather. As with most reviewers I seldom need to use the Hi setting b/c it really does move a great amount of air on med and low. When I have needed an extra fan at home to blow air across the living room I hooked this fan up to a 120v converter and on high you could feel the air 15 feet across the room. It was a little loud but playing video games on big speakers, who cares? I have also experimented using this as a window fan hooked up to a 12v solar panel system I have at home and it works great. For me the med setting is what I use the most and the amp draw is about 1.89 , actually better than the cheaper little fans at big box stores that move less air and use more energy. Overall if you need a fan that can be used on a 12v solar power system or car camping, that can move a good amount of air, and don't mind the sound of an air condtioner, then this fan is worth the money. If you are someone who is looking for a 12v fan that has the perfomance of a household fan, buy a dc/ac converter and plug your standard household fan into that. You really aren't going to find the same perfomance on 12v. But this one comes as close as you're going to get.

Yes, it's a bit on the pricey side when compared to other fans you can get at the local big box store. But this fan is worth every penny.

First of all, it pushes a good deal of air through it, even on the lowest setting. Along with that, the fan is ultra efficient when it comes to converting your precious electricity to airflow. The test for that efficiency? Take the fan and turn it on to its lowest speed. Then turn it off and time how long the blades continue to spin. The faster it comes to a stop, the more energy you're wasting just to overcome friction in the fan bearings.

Running this test, it takes around 20 seconds for this fan to come to a complete stop. The others? They stop spinning almost immediately...2 or 3 seconds TOPS.

Secondly, this fan has more blades than most other fans. More blades equals more airflow.

Thirdly, this fan has a solid cord with a solid plug, both more than capable of handling the fan's power requirements on its highest setting. Which leads me to to:

Fourthly, that high setting REALLY moves some air! I rarely have had to use it, even on the hottest days.

Bottom line: If you need a well built, efficient, high airflow 12V fan, this is the one you want. If you'd rather have something that costs much less but that barely moves any air, wastes electricity, and will probably break if you look at it the wrong way, then this isn't your fan.

Well, you can't have everything. I really reviewed the reviews of this product here on Amazon before I decided to purchase this fan. Yes I read all about the complaints about the "chintzy" feet, and the apparent "cheapness" of the construction. I had to balance these negatives against what other reviewers on other websites chortled about "The fan was w-a-y out of warranty when the fan motor quit and you know what, they sent me a new one at no charge". Others chimed in with similar claims of exceptional customer service.

Then there was the noise issue. Everyone seems to think this fan is exceptionally quiet for the amount of air that it moves. The fan is impressively quiet but not silent on even the lowest setting and I expected that.

Many automotive type fans are horribly noisey; they eat battery power like a wolf eats rabbits, and this fan does neither. It can safely be powered by an automobile battery, fully charged in good condition for a full 12 hours and not affect the battery's ability to start the car. I would not recommend discharging an automotive battery regularly like this, but it may demonstrate that an RV battery would have power to spare powering this fan, even for a lengthy overnight stop.

How much air is "That Much Air?". I placed the fan four feet from my face on an 85F day at 30% humidity. On low I felt the fan on my face, but at that temp I switched to medium and liked that amount of airflow substantially better. The high setting surely didn't blow my hair straight back, but then again my hair is a quarter inch in length. I furrowed my eyebrows and decided that "high" really didn't add that much to my comfort. Picky picky yes/no?

If the swivel plastic feet do break, big deal: I'll glue a swatch of Velcro on the bottom and another on a tiny board, mahogany or teak or whatever and suddenly the fan is no longer "chintzy (remember that word is their's not mine)".

Other notes, the lighter socket plug and wire is anything but bottom drawer. The plug has it's own tiny LED to let you know the socket may be playing possum and not the fan, and the power cord is substantial as well.

I bought this fan with a specific objective in mind: MEXICO. When the power goes off, this guy goes online along with a couple of LED lights for the bedroom. My new BiPAP, this fan, and the lights are going to transform hours spent in lightless moist heat into hopefully a night of rest, reading, and comfort.

From what I have seen I would buy this fan again in a heartbeat. It has no peers never mind betters.

I have hung this fan from a chain/caribeener in my camper van over the sofa bed. It was pricey but being hot in the camper van was not an option. It has several speeds. Glad I purchased this. I paired this with a 12 foot 12 volt extension and my maxxair ceiling fan and can use the fan anywhere in the van as needed when we are boondocking (unserviced sites). Keeps the dog cool. Keeps the people cool. It's pretty cool!

The fan arrived very quickly from the time it was ordered. I installed it in the front window of the cap on my pickup truck to provide a constant stream of fresh air for the dogs when in traffic or parked. It works very well and moves a sufficient amount of air on the medium setting. I will see how it stands up overtime and may purchase a second fan for use in the trailer.

Love this fan for use in my Westfalia camper van because I have four small senior rescue dogs and their comfort and safety is of prime importance to me. Only downside (for the moment) is that I haven't been able to come up with a way of securing it so it stands on the passenger seat of my van. Spoke with the manufacturers who told me it was originally designed for use with a dog kennel, hence the two hooks on the top for hanging it onto such a device.

A steady little workhorse. As an experiment, I used this fan to create a DC Air Purifier - after the motor/controls died on our large round Honeywell HEPA Air Purifier. With a bit of plywood, some weatherstripping and elastic cord, it is held horizontally on top of the "round" unit containing the filter. The size fits nicely. On medium setting, the fan pulls air OK through the filter. It consumes far less power than the original air purifier. Using a 12v power block and a AC timer to cycle it on and off, it has run all winter near a basement wood cook stove that warms the house.

Awesome fan, super quiet, pushes a lot of air, light and seems like it will last a long time. Most importantly it has a very small draw of power which is the main reason I bought it. The least draw on the market. Perfect in our little VW camper to help circulate air on those warm nights and is nearly silent.
