I've seen a lot of reviews on this product complaining about the Youmi Mini USB Microphone not working, is completely silent or inputting very soft audio. Here's the thing: it does work. Most USB devices that have a microphone (like this one) come muted from the factory.
If you're on Windows 10 or 11, go to your Start or search box/icon, type Control Panel and open it. From there navigate to the green text "Hardware and Sound", and click on the green text "Sound" or the blue text "Manage audio devices." A pop-up box should appear. Navigate to the tab "Recording" on the top left hand corner, and find a device that says "Microphone" "USB PnP Sound Device." If it isn't working, or not picking up any audio, you should see no green bars appear on the right hand side of the device's driver. Right click on the driver and select "Properties", then navigate to the tab "Levels" on the top middle-right hand side. You should see an option to adjust its level. It should come as "0" by default. Type in the value "100" or adjust the level using the slider. From then on, click "Apply", then "OK."
It should now work. Make sure you right-click on the driver again and set it as the default device. I forgot to include that step in the video I attached. Test your microphone by recording your own voice using a sound recorder (most OS's should come with a tool for it, for Windows 11 it's "Sound Recorder.") Make sure to manually adjust an app's settings to utilize the device should the mic not work in a given application.
In terms of the mic itself, it's decent, not the best but it's a bang for your buck and better than some webcam mics.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2021I bought this for a Raspberry Pi build. The recordings I made with it using arecord were terrible, so I connected it to my Linux machine (running Adobe Audition in Wine (still my favorite DAW)), and here's what I found:
The SNR on these is awful. The attached screen shot is with the software gain at 100%, and me saying "testing" one foot away from the mic at a normal, "indoor" speaking voice. You can barely discern the voice from the noise, and there's no way Google Assistant will be able to use any audio this thing captures.
There are only very small pinholes in the housing to let the sound in. I thought that, maybe, the input was muffled by the housing, so I tried drilling a large hole. This didn't improve things. Next, I tried removing the thin, felt cover from the mic (the little brass-colored disc that you see in the photos). But, nope, this didn't make a difference, either.
I know I've forfeited any chance I had at returning this piece of trash. But, I figured, for the cheap price, it was worth the experiment.
Save your money. Look elsewhere.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2023This review is for Model: MI-305. I was attempting to work on a Flip project and discovered that the microphone on my X1 was not working. To make a long story short non-working mics is a known issue on my model of computer. Anyway, one-day delivery worked. I installed the mic into a spare USB port, changed the microphone in Settings to the USB device, tested the function in "Sound Recorder" and the microphone worked immediately. The sound quality is very good, clear, clean crips, and does not sound tinny. Notably, this mic does not add to desktop clutter which is a huge plus. Given the way things are today I would caution that the mic should be turned off when not in use.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2018I needed a microphone for voice recognition on a certain brand of laptop, which are notrorius for internal microphone failures. This is an ideal solution in that it can stay plugged into a USB port and does not protrude noticeably from the side of the laptop. It was very easy to use, just plug and play, and it does a good job with my computer for use in voice recognition. My only problem is that it really does not record voice or perform audio for video conferencing well at all. You actually need to be inches away from the mic to record or have a video conference call, and playback of recorded audio is actually pretty bad. I have tried various setting and nothing seems to help. If I had purchased it with the intention of using it to record or video conference I would have given it two stars. However if you just need it for voice recognition it does the job well, and I would recommend it for that single application.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024There seems to be some unfair reviews regarding the quality of this USB mic on Amazon, so I felt compelled to defend the product. After adjusting the mic settings in Windows, I found that this mic works wonderfully. I had absolutely no issues with the recording quality or sensitivity of the mic, and I fully endorse it. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2020I was excited to get this for my pc which actually sits directly in front of me so the front facing USB was ideal. It horribly picks up distortion and my home office is relatively quiet. It also says on the packaging that the device swivels to allow you to direct the mic in the right direction but it is solid molded and there is no such feature. Overall, couldn't use it at all in the end so it was a waste of money. I was trying to go compact, but ended up going back to my original plan.
