Description

12V LED Strip Light GuideOur Waterproof IP65 LED Flex Strips are perfect for lighting professionals as well as homeowners with a do-it-yourself attitude. They are easy to use, making it possible to install yourself even with minimal knowledge on the electrical side. The strips can be quickly cut down to size and come with double-sided 3M adhesive tape, adding to the ease of installation. They must be powered from a constant 12VDC. If you prefer LED strips without a silicone covering, the non-waterproof option can be found here.

Density

Density # of LEDs Lumens Wattage Cuttable Max Run
M Reel Ft M M Reel
Standard (SD) 30 150 180 540 7.2W 27W 4" 2 Reels
High (HD) 60 300 360 1080 14.4W 40W 2" 1 Reel

LED Density is measured per meter. The more LEDs per length increases the light quality and brightness.  Please see the table on the right for more details.

Standard-density LED strip = 30 LEDs per Meter

High-density LED Strip = 60 LEDs per Meter

Colors

We offer these LED strips in Color-Changing RGB. Single Colors: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Ultra-Violet (UV) and whites: Warm-White (3000K), Neutral-White (4000K), and Cool-White (6000K)

Lengths

To avoid buying more than necessary we offer custom-length LED light strips in 3-foot increments up to 16.4 feet long (1 full reel = 5M). However, we realize that all applications have different needs which is why the strips can be cut every 3 LEDs. There is a thin black line over solder pads, which marks where you are to cut the strips.

End-to-End Connections

cutting and connecting led flex strip

When there is a break in your application you can still run one strip to another using 20-24 gauge wire or LED strip connectors. TAKE NOTE: Standard Density maximum run length is 32.8 feet (2 reels) and High-Density maximum run length is 16.4 feet (1 reel). After the maximum run length, the voltage drop becomes too great and you will lose light and efficiency from your system. If your application needs more than the maximum run length you will have to get another power supply or run a wire from the extra strip directly back to the first power supply (wiring in parallel).

Connections can be made by soldering wire in between strips or by using solderless clamps (see right). Only a full-reel length (16.4 ft.) has connections at both ends, shorter lengths only have power from one end of the strip. If you want to make more connections you will need to solder or use strip connectors. Here is a good tutorial on wiring the strips together if you'd like more information.

Brightness

The LED strip lights use 5050 SMD LEDs which give off a nice light while staying cool along with the flexible board. Standard density LED strips give off 180 Lumens/Ft whereas the High-Density strips give off 360 Lumens/Ft.

Standard Density Common Uses: accent lighting, back-lighting, stair lighting, shelf lighting, toe kick lighting.

High-Density Common Uses: task lighting, under cabinet lighting, cove lighting, area lighting, sign lighting

A 12-volt DC Power Supply is required to run these LED Strip Lights. The wattage table shows different lengths and their wattages. Use it to add up the wattage of all the separate, full length runs you want to run off of one power supply. This will help you decide the size of the power supply that will suffice for your project and keep your LED strips running safely.

Connecting to power is easy with 2.1mm plugs. We have extra power harnesses or plugs that will aid you if you need to cut and make your own connections. If you are direct wiring, you can easily cut the plug off and use simple wire-to-wire techniques such as soldering, wire nuts, electrical tape, etc. to wire to your 12VDC power.

Dimming

These strips are dimmable and can be used with our 12V PWM Dimmers. The dimmer will go between your power supply and strips (see picture). The available dimmers can be seen above by clicking on the accessories tab above. We have a variety of PWM dimmers ranging from single-channel remote to multi-channel remote and wall mount PWM dimmers.

If you require an AC Dimming Control from Lutron or Leviton, use a dimmable power supply.

Controlling RGB Strips

The RGB strips use Red, Green & Blue LEDs to mix colors and show a variety of different colors. In order to use these, you will need an RGB controller. The controller box goes in between your power supply and strips and then you can control your strips with the remote. You can pick different colors or an option that lets you alternate through them.

I would like to buy a 9 ft Strip and them split it in half and connect to both a RGB Controller Strip, one going left from the controller and the other going right (controlled is in the middle of the cabinet). I see that I can cut them but each strip only comes with one 4 pin connector. I see a Strip Splitter that be connected to the RGB controller and one strip. How do I connect the "cut" LED strip to the second strip splitter? I don't see any connector for connecting a "cut" strip to a Strip Splitter?
ON 23 Jul, 2019
Your answer has been submitted for consideration
BEST ANSWER: There are two solutions. The easiest one is to buy 2 separate 6 ft RGB Strips as each would come with the required connections for the splitter. Or, you could buy the appropriate EZ Click-Tight LED Strip Connector (EZ-XIPX-X) and the RGB harness (#LO-C4P-10) we sell.

I am purchasing these to use in a niche inside a residential steam shower. Due to waterproofing requirements of the steam shower, it will probably not be easy to replace if LED's fail. Would I be able to cut the wire exposed from the tile and splice/wire a new one if I had to replace? Otherwise I would have to tear out tile, mortar, backerboard, etc. to get into the wall and replace from receptacle on an outer wall.

I am confused by the Wattage (30led) for the 'Full Roll' (5 meter), listed as 27W. I see there's a similar question answered already. However, my configuration will be 6x 65" 30led segments (total 32.5 feet) daisy chained from one power supply, outdoors. Which numbers should I use? Thanks!
question asker ON 30 Oct, 2024
Your answer has been submitted for consideration
BEST ANSWER: You are correct, the wattage for a full reel is less than 5 3-ft pieces.  The wattage per Meter increases with parallel connections.  It sounds like you are talking about parallel connections (each lenght having a home run back to the power supply).  If that is the case, you should use the wattage listed for a 6-ft length (a little more than 65") and multiply by 6.

Will these lights work as grow lights for plants? Are they “full spectrum?”
NW3 ON 26 Apr, 2023
Your answer has been submitted for consideration
BEST ANSWER: The output spectrum of the 12V LED strips is not full-spectrum.  The Cool-White is heavy on the Blue end of the spectrum, Warm-White is heavy on the Red end.  We have had customers have good success using the Cool-White strips in starting seedlings and the Warm-White strips to supplement flowering.  You could mix the Cool0-White and Warm-White color temperatures for a more full-spectrum effect.

Can these be powered directly by a boat or RV 12VDC system? Boat and RV battery voltages are typically 11.8 to 12.8V during discharge but can be as high as 14.6V during charging. Is an additional DC regulation circuit required to support this range?
Mark ON 25 Feb, 2023

BEST ANSWER: When using the 12V LED flex strip in an auto or boat application, it is recommended to use a voltage regulator between the power source and the LED strip.  We have specific recommendations in our LED Resource section here.

Will this product work with the SWITCHEX Power Supply and Dimmer Switch that you also sell on this site? I can't tell if the Switchex unit is PWM or not.
Tom Cianelli ON 09 Sep, 2022

BEST ANSWER: The SWITCHEX power supply will work with these LED Strips. With dimming type, it depends more on the power supply type than the LED Strip. Since the SWITCHEX is an all-in-one power supply and dimmer, it is perfect for flexible strip light applications.

Can strips be joined at 90 degree angle
Dave spalding ON 12 Jan, 2022
Your answer has been submitted for consideration
BEST ANSWER: The best way to join them at a 90-degree angle is either two strip-to-wire connectors and bending the wire the 90 degrees or using this corner connector which is mainly used for the IP20 strip so you would need to scrape the silicone off the solder points of the waterproof strip if you used this particular style as opposed to the first option.

If the high density lighting strip draws 4.8 watts per foot per your wattage table why does 6 ft only draw 20.8 watts. 4.8 x 6 = 28.8.
Joe ON 17 Nov, 2021
Your answer has been submitted for consideration
BEST ANSWER: This is standard for 12V strip lights. The beginning of the strip light closest to the power supply holds the bulk of the current. Therefore, shorter lengths typically run at a higher wattage, whereas if you have them in a long strip, the wattage/foot goes down as the farther the run goes from the power supply, the less current it carries.

Beware! After about 2 years the factory solder joints will break causing sections of the LED strip to no longer work. Purchased this, R6060AA-CWT-06, Nov. 2017 and noticed maybe 2 years later sections of the LED strip no longer worked. The LED strip is mounted with both double-sided tape and clear silicone since tape doesn't last very long. It's mounted to a rigid surface, so there is no reason for these to break from bending or any movement. Unforunately, every item I've purchased from here has had problems. The RF Wireless Single Channel Dimming Controller also drains batteries pretty quickly if you power these strips with a battery box.
Ted ON 08 Oct, 2021

BEST ANSWER: We are currently in the process of adding an IP68 rated LED strip to address outdoor applications.  Short run times are a limitation of using AA Batteries for power.  For applicatons that require long run times, using an outdoor rated power supply (like the Mean Well LPV Series) is recommended.
