The beginning of our project began with the creation of a 1/5 model prototype of our original design. Our design was inspired by the great pyramids of Egypt; to add a fun twist, we inverted the design and made the bottom of the pyramid the seat. The base of our original prototype was 4'x4', with every layer afterwards increasing by 1/2'. The roll cardboard was one 1'x1'.
With a few minor adjustments, we determined what our final project measurements would be.
This saw cut the PVC pipe.
Here is a photo of Cara with our main support system!!
The top of our cardboard chair is 48'x48', with each layer beneath tapering in two inches. Each layer is three cuts of cardboard thick. The main support in the system is the 5'x5' PVC pipe that is evenly distributed in-between each layer of cardboard. This has made our cardboard chair impressively sturdy, having the ability to support up to 250 lbs. There are 8 total layers, and the chair sits about 50 inches tall.
This is our final product. It has a sleek modern design, sharp corners, and is suitable for all ages.
