How can we create a wearable device that effectively assists visually impaired individuals in navigating outdoor environments by providing real-time information about obstacles, terrain changes, and other environmental factors? Individuals with visual impairments face significant challenges in navigating outdoor environments safely due to the inability to rely on visual cues to detect obstacles, changes in terrain, or hazards. Conventional assistive tools, such as canes or guide dogs, offer limited support in identifying dynamic elements, such as uneven ground, low-hanging branches, or sudden changes in elevation, which can lead to accidents or injuries. Furthermore, these traditional methods do not provide real-time feedback about the user's spatial surroundings, making it difficult to maintain independence and confidence during outdoor activities. There is a need for an advanced, wearable assistive system that combines computer vision, spatial awareness, and haptic feedback to provide immediate, accurate guidance and enhance the safety and mobility of visually impaired individuals in outdoor environments.

The UNIHIKER interfaces with an IO Extender to manage connections with other peripherals, such as sensors and communication modules, ensuring a seamless flow of data throughout the system. The device is integrated into the wearable system, positioned in a waist belt or chest strap to remain easily accessible while minimizing bulk.
This USB camera captures visual data from the environment and feeds it directly into the UNIHIKER for processing. With a resolution of 0.3 megapixels, the camera provides sufficient detail for recognizing obstacles, changes in terrain, and other spatial elements that are crucial for navigation. Mounted on the user's chest or headgear, the camera captures the user’s field of view, continuously supplying real-time video input for image analysis. The processed data helps in identifying potential hazards such as steps, uneven surfaces, or low-hanging obstacles, enabling the system to alert the user promptly.
The Nordic nRF52 Development Kit is dedicated to managing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication and controlling the haptic feedback motor. Additionally, it manages the haptic motor's operation, providing tactile feedback in real-time.
