Day 1: Eyram and I planned what our project was going to be especially since we had to make sure it involved the 4 characteristics: pointy, splat, cold and boing. Our idea was for it to be a rose in a globe. Inspired by Beauty and the Beast.
Day 2: We decided in order to make the globe round, we would use the bendy cardboard and cut out strips. We measured out the amount of cardboard we would need for 10 strips, plus a bit more so we had room for error. Then we spray painted the cardboard piece white and let it dry.
Day 3: We cut out the pieces of the rose and painted them. First problem was having to search the whole room to find round objects to trace to create our circles for the petals. Then, Then we had to change the color of the rose because we could not find one to match what we wanted. Instead of the base of the rose being dark grey it is now light grey. While waiting for the paint to dry, we cut the 1 inch strips for the globe.
Day 4: Today, one of us glued the petals of the rose together while the other one glued the strips together into rings. We made the rings double layered so it would be stronger and sturdier. We also made the stem and thorns for the rose today. This took most of the class period. While trying to glue the rose, the glue wasn't holding the petals together as fast as we thought it woulde had to wait until it was mostly dry to be able to glue the next piece.
Day 5: We started gluing the rings to each other to make the sphere globe form. We discovered that since it was double layered, and we didn't glue the layers themselves together, they were sliding apart. So, for most of them we had to glue at least a little section of the layers together to prevent it from sliding which took up much more time than we expected. It also became bulky and thick because it was double layered which we didn't think about too much in the beginning. We also only ended up using 6 of the 10 rings because it started becoming too crowded. Unfortunately, it began to turn into more of an egg shape that we couldn't really change at this point. A few of the pieces started getting too bumpy like it was too long, so we had to cut one and re-glue it so it fit the shape more. We also glued the stem to the rose.
Day 6: We were going to paint the stem black to make it more intense, but now it is more of a dark gray color. For the splat effect, we decided to drip paint off of a brush onto the rose. While we let the rose dry, we finished gluing the sphere together. That night, we went into the lab to finish gluing the rose to the inside of the globe. At first, we didn't think the globe would hold the rose since it is very top heavy, and decided we were going to make supports to hold it up. When we glued the stem of the rose to the base, we discovered it was able to hold the rose and only put another small square of cardboard under where the stem was glued to support the weight. We had finished the project.
The main thing we learned along the way: Sometimes it doesn't always work how you want it to, but you just have to be able to adjust and work with it. For example, the sphere was supposed to be more sphere shaped and less egg-shaped. The color we originally wanted to use we had to change, and sometimes we needed more time than we originally thought we would need.
