Story

We have our washer and dryer located in the garage and I often forget to change the load when it finishes each cycle. I thought this unit would allow me to easily detect the end cycle of the system and send an alert via email notifying the user that they need to switch their laundry. This way you never have to worry about leaving a load of wet laundry in the washer all day. This should also help for all of us who forget to get laundry when the dryer is finished and end up running it again for 15-20 minutes to get rid of the wrinkles.

The first thing I did was design a case that would hold the SmartEdge Agile and use 6 magnets to hold it in place along the washer or dryer.

I started with the Washer and ran the unit a few times with the SmartEdge Agile device stuck to the side using the 3D printed mount.

I used my phone for the gateway to connect to the agile device over BLE and using the AI Studio to perform the 3 main steps in Continuous Learning:

I first observed the sensors for a few cycles collecting data using the Predictive Maintenance section of the AI Studio Workspaces.

Once I had enough data from running a few loads of laundry, I clicked the button to Generate Model. This then allowed me to download this model as well as upload it to the Agile Device so it could now detect patterns.

The device also allows the model to be enhanced by continuously learning from future cycles. After my fifth load of laundry I could easily identify the pattern for the end of the cycle and labeled it 'Cycle Finished'. Now I can use this data to retrain, generating a more accurate model.

The last part was to get the notification when this pattern was detected so I know my laundry is finished. I went to the AI Rules for this device and added an alert. I selected 'Pattern' for the condition and then selected my pattern we identified earlier as the 'Cycle Finished' pattern. Now when this pattern is detected I should get an email notification.

Sure enough, it worked!

The awesome thing about this device is that you can train it to work with any washer or dryer. Simply run it a few cycles and it detects the patterns and you are good to go.

This tiny device is great and I can't wait to try training some more advanced models.
