Last August, Wiznet released a new network io module product. Wiznet's io module is a module that does not contain MCU, but only Hardwired TCP/IP chip. Therefore, users who want to use the network io module must use a separate MCU. And since TCP/IP protocol processing is all handled by Wiznet's chip, users can implement Ethernet functions very easily.
Wiznet has released three modules. These are the W5100S-io, W5500-io, and W6100-io. Each module differs only in the type of chip included, but almost everything is the same. Since the module contains all the circuits necessary for the basic operation of the chip, users can use it without difficult circuit design. And it can be used by connecting to the user's MCU through SPI, and it is very small in size because it does not include an RJ45 connector. Since the basic Ethernet PHY circuit is built-in, users can use it just by connecting to RJ45 or transformer.
Below is a simple comparison table of these three modules.
So, in this article, I would like to share a reference circuit that these three modules perform basic operations. Since these modules have all the basic circuits built in, they operate by simply connecting them.
W5100s-io Ref SCHW5500-io is a compact size network io module with W5500. Basically, since the circuit for using the W5500 is included and the PHY circuit is also included, the user can use Ethernet immediately by connecting to RJ45 (with a transformer). W5500-io is an ideal option for users who want to quickly develop Ethernet systems. W5500-io is hardware compatible with W5100S-io and W6100-io.
Feature- Plugin Network Module.
- Hardware compatible with W5100S-io, W6100-io.
- Usable without H/W design for W5500.
- Fast evaluation for W5500 & MCU in the target board.
- Support high speed SPI interface.
- Supports TCP/IP protocols such as TCP, UDP, IPv4, ICMP, IGMP, ARP and PPPoE
- Very small form factor : 20mm x 24mm x 2.6mm
The picture above is the Reference Schematic of W5100s-io. It's a very simple circuit. Simply connect. It can be used immediately by connecting 3.3V voltage, SPI to Host MCU, and MDI signal to RJ45. Adding Ethernet functionality is very simple.
