The plan is to make, an electric longboard. So far, I think I am going to use 4 layers of plywood. I am not completely sure about the dimensions, but I think the board is going yo be around 40 inches long and 9 to 10 inches wide. I am going to start the project with designing and making the board. Afterwards, I am going to buy and add other parts to it .
Jan. 14.
Today, I did a little more research about the longboard. I looked at some materials that I will have to buy. I think I am going to use maple plywood to make the board.
Jan. 16.
Today I am looking up the maple plywood to buy. I thin k Ima going to buy it from Home Depot. Jan. 17.
Dave and I decided what plywood we are going to order. Meanwhile, I am making a list of other things that I will need to buy to make this longboard. I am also making a "plan" of things to do, so when it comes to actual assembly, I will have all the materials and tools that I need.
Jan. 24.
Today I found the website that Dave and I are going to order all of the materials for the board from. the link : https://www.roarockit.com/skateboard-building/veneer/longboard-maple/longboard-maple-veneer-9-layer/#.XDj9qy3MxR0. We are going to get: 9 layers of maple veneer, grip tape , and thin air vacuum.
Jan. 25.
Today I am going through the website with the materials for the longboard. It has a lot of useful tips and videos about making the longboard. Also, Dave has already ordered materials, so they should be here soon.
Jan. 28.
Today I watched more videos of how to make the board. Specifically, how to glue it all together, and how to use the air vacuum.
Jan. 30.
Today I made a list of thing I ned to have during the assembly of the longboard. Also I made a list of step to assemble it.
Feb. 11.
Today I looked more in the process of glueing. Also, Hazel and I decided to work together on our projects. We are going to come to the lab on Wednesday night and glue our skateboards.
Feb. 15.
Last night, Hazel and I went to the Maker's lab. We work on both, her and mine boards. We glued 3 layers of plywood. We worked together on our boards, and in my opinion, we made a great team.
Feb. 18.
Today I worked with Sam. I helped him glue his last layers of plywood. Because we only have one big vacuum bag, I was not able to glue my layers today. I am going to that tomorrow night. I have to glue the last 3 layers. Also, Sam and I made a list of things to buy for our longboards, such as trucks, grip tape etc.
Feb. 20.
Dave and I finished glueing my board. We glued last three layers.
Feb. 21.
Today I found that the three layers that we glued did not glue properly. The reason for that was that the vacuum bag deflated overnight. So I had to fix that by putting glue in the places where the board was not glued. I also helped Hazel to make her second board.
Feb. 25.
Today I helped Hazel to find the dimensions for the skateboard that she wants. I also found some grip tae online. The plan is to shape the board using the shape of the grip tape.
Feb. 26
The website that Sam and I decided to buy longboard parts, is too expensive. So I went on amazon to find some cheaper parts. I went through different options and I think this is the best one. It includes everything: trucks, wheels, and bolts. This is the link for the set. https://www.amazon.com/Bigfoot-Longboard-Skateboard-Stalkers-Bearings/dp/B0083X004W/ref=sr_1_59?crid=3891ZC392NC6V&keywords=longboard%2Btrucks%2Band%2Bwheels%2Bset&qid=1551204681&s=gateway&sprefix=longboard%2B%2Caps%2C137&sr=8-59&th=1
March 20
Today was the first class after the break. Today I traces the grip tape on the plywood.
After that I traced another line an inch away from the original one. Here is the picture of how I did that.
March 21
Today I used the jigsaw to cut out the board from the plywood.
I clamped the board, so it was fixed and I was able to cut it as precise as possible.
After I cut the board, It looked like this. There is still a long way to go.
March 22
Today I started sanding the board. I sanded both flat sides.
March 25
Today I sanded the edges of the board.
The edges are smooth and nice.
March 26
Today I created the design for the back side of my bord. First I made the image in Illustrator And then transferred it to the laser cutting program.
I also tried laser cutting this design on a practice piece of wood.
March 27
Today I laser cut the design on my board. First I had to make sort of a frame out of blue tape on the board. It was helping to see where the design has to be.
After that I turned on the machome and inserted the board. It was important that the board was straight, so the design happened as planned.
After that I locted the middle of the board and the point of the beginnig with the laser. and was left to do is to press start. It took about 20 minutes for the machine to finish.
The board after the laser cut looked like this.
March 28
Today I tried different colors of stains.
Both colors did not satisfy me, and I will need to get something lighter that the color on the first picture.
April 1
Today I sanded the board a little bit more in order to get rid of the burn marks near the letters and K sign.
April 2
Today I cased the board. I did 2 layers each side. I first put one layer then sanded it. Then I put another layer.
April 3
Today I finished putting the last layers on the flat sides of the board. I also helped Hazel with gluing up her board.
Aplril 5
Today I put tree layers on the edges of the board, I sanded the after each layer, in order to get rid of the scratchy parts.
April 8
Today I put the grip tape on my board. This is what it looks like:
After that I used the trucks to mark the places where the screws are going to be. I measured everything and made sure that the trucks are straigh.
After that I used this thing to make little wholes in the board before drilling the holes.
And after that I drilled the holes.
April 10
Today I put the trucks on the board. I had to use some tools to do that.
April 11
Today I put the wheels on The trucks.
First I took out bearings, and then I put them on trucks.
Then I put the wheels on and tightened the bolts.
This is what the finished project looks like:
