DIY Smart Glasses

Introduction

These Smart Glasses were developed as part of the bachelor project of the System Engineering degree programme at the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences. All production data is provided on this platform. This means that anyone with suitable equipment can build the glasses.

The project can be roughly divided into these four categories:Mechanics, electronics, firmware and android app.

Electronic

The electronics consist of two specially developed PCBs, which are attached to the right and left of the housing. The main board on the right is responsible for controlling the user interface and the display. But also for the Bluetooth connection. The left PCB contains the battery and the charging management.

Note: ControllerPCB V1 with additional PCB due to design error. This has been corrected for V2.

Mechanic

The frame can be printed with a standard 3D printer. In our case, it was printed with an SLS printer to enhance the surface and increase the stability.

Firmware

The firmware was made using CubeMX and Keil µVision. CubeMX was mainly used to enable the chips functions. Keil µVision on the other hand was used for coding. In prio to flashing the firmware onto the chip, the Bluetooth stack has to be flashed onto the coprocessor or else BLE wouldn't be enabled. This can be done using the files in the Firmware GitHub repo under FW + BT Stack.

Android-App

The android-app is pretty basic and consists of just 2 services and 2 activities. The BluetoothLeService is used for everything regarding BLE and the NotifyListenerService is used to get notifications and provide the data to the DeviceControlActivity where it gets sent to the Smart Glasses.
