Subject 1: Didi
Occupation: Secretary
Comments:
-there are too many functions that make the phone aspect of the phone harder and harder to use -generally requires too much attention to even use on the move -wishes the phone had an easier redial function
Subject 1: Antoinette Badio
Occupation: Personal Banker
Proof: She did not allow me to take her picture since we were in a bank so she gave me her business card.
Comments: -usually do not use the phone on the move since it is dangerous -use earbuds when talking on the phone -when she has to use it in the car, she wishes it were easier to let people know that she is busy and that is the reason she cannot answer
Ask them to recall the last time they remember not having their phone readily available (i.e. in their hand) and wanted to access something using their mobile phone (i.e. make a call, look at the BART schedule, reply to a message, play a game, etc).
While either driving or biking while otherwise occupied.
Where do they usually keep their phone (i.e. pocket, book bag, purse, etc)? What was the task they wanted to perform?
Front left pocket
Have them describe the action they wanted to do (i.e. reply yes to a message, ask for directions to an ice cream shop, write a review of a restuant, etc). Ask them to imagine a performing the same task using a wrist worn interface touchscreen.
Generally something that you wouldn't do on a normal basis so that you don't generate a false positive. Ideally incorporating the touchscreen and a motion gesture.
Assignment Part 2:
Given that I believe the smartwatch should be smarter by making more out of what is less, I want to limit how much data is communicated at once in order to solve the problem in an elegant and intuitive way rather than brute forcing a solution by jamming everything into a tiny screen to make a smartphone alternative.
- brainstorm at least a dozen different ideas
1. A watch that contains a pill that you can program to remind you to take at certain times
2. A watch where tapping it acts as pressing the home button on a phone
3. A simple microphone for musicians to use their wrist watch to either tune their instrument or record their music
4. A watch that acts as an RFID card so that you dont have to take out your wallet everytime you want to access something
5. They say time is money so a watch that tracks how much money you spend throughout the day
6. Habit Kicker: everytime you commit a bad habit you mark the counter, and it tracks your progress and when you commit that habit the most
7. Wristwatch that makes sure you drink water every hour or so by tracking a wrist to mouth motion
8. Wristwatch paired with smartphone attached to hip that tracks your body motion and helps you become a better athlete through motion analytics
9. Dietary consumption restrictor: limit the number of times your bring that spoon to your mouth to help you lose weight
10. Every time you eat something, you input the number of calories in it
11. Preprogram your speed dial contacts so every time you want to call them you just gesture the respective number on your speed dial list
12. A news feed type screen that relays text messages/emails/news
- select your favorite idea and justify why you chose it
Discrete pill reminder: I chose this one because I have a lot of family members that rely on prescription medication to stay healthy and well. My mother in particular relies on pills that she has to take on a daily basis due to her diabetes. She is also approaching that age where she is starting to forget whether or not she left on the stove or remembered to take her medication. A simple phone alarm isn't enough because sometimes she loses her phone. A watch with a pocket to hold a few pills while looking exactly like a watch would be a great way for her to be on top of her pills. - create a low-fidelity prototype
A low fidelity prototype would consist of a little sleeve for a capsule to fit in with a built in motor to vibrate when it is time to take the pill - get feedback from at least one user on your prototype
Some people would have to take multiple pills and having a watch that can store multiple pills will be very bulky and not aesthetic
