I was brainstorming with the amazing crew at BSides Adelaide about making a conference badge and hosting a hardware village. The best part was that the conference had a mascot. Wombat which is native to Australia was chosen as the mascot in a cyborg transition artwork.
Taking apart just the face portion gets us a nice badge shape.
The cyborg eye would house all the glitter and glamour of LEDs. So we put one RGB LED to run by default. And then 6 SMD LEDs dedicated to 6 CTF challenges.
Micro-USB for CTF interfacing, a coin cell and all the components are housed on the backside of the badge.
Turning on the slide switch glows the central RGB LED. The 6 SMD LEDs if soldered also glow for a couple of seconds to give a cool show-off of all things unlocked. The correct CTF flags unlock and do a cool animation for LEDs.
At the conference, we hosted a soldering village to help people solder their own LEDs in the colours they want and personalise their badges. The LEDs do a cool animation based on the CTF flags.
Instructions on how to solder the badge as well as play at CTF are here.
The badge remembers the flags even if the cable is disconnected. Happy Hacking!
