This project started out a while back when I bought a humidifier/essential oil diffuser for my room. I found myself just staring at the turbulent flow of the water mist, as I day dreamed. During one of these day dreaming sessions I thought how cool it'd be to have a humidifier shaped like a rocket with the mist coming out of the exhaust.
xkcd had the same idea, apparently. So I got to work designing a SpaceX Starhopper and got it functional! But that's a completely different design. Anyway, when I realized that it was the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, I just had to make a Saturn V version. I had just over a day to design and build it, but I had some experience doing this, so I took on the challenge!
I designed a 3D model of the rocket in Fusion 360, making sure to make it small enough to fit in the 5x5x5" bed of my 3D printer. You can find the files on Thingiverse.
The 3D prints went without any issues, except for the bottom part, where the exhaust nozzles broke off while removing the support structure. I've since strengthened the connection and would recommend reducing the support density.
The rocket it in three sections and the humidifier fits inside the bottom most part. The humidifier is a Grove water atomization module. It's one of the smallest kits I could find. I designed the water tank to hold a wick that sips the water up to the ultrasonic transducer that converts the water to a mist and ejects it in a turbulent plume!
The only issue is, it pushes the water mist up; and I want the mist to go down. This is where I got a bit clever. I designed the chamber such that the water mist can circle back around the atomizer and fall down from the exhaust ports.
After that, all that remained was to paint the model and make a stand to show it off!
I left enough space in the top chamber to house the electronics, away from all that corrosive water mist. So, the next step of the project would be that. I think it might be interesting to do a bunch of humidifiers, in the shape of all the rockets! If you'd like one on your work desk, reach out @tinkrmind!
