I created 3D printed leaf earring to take with me when I graduate from UC Berkeley, to remind me that I can dance anywhere.
I first started dancing Sophomore year at Berkeley when I joined and AFX (Aspirations, Family, Experience) Training team. AFX accepted everyone regardless of dance level and I took that chance to try something I've only dreamed to do until then. Semester after semester, I stayed in AFX, as I improved, as I joined other dance teams, as I led a dance team. Through, dance I became more and more confident.
Most Berkeley dance teams, especially AFX teams are enormous, and can reach to around 70 people on a team. In addition, we do not have the luxury of dance studios and mirrors on campus for these teams. We use the resources we have, open spaces around campus such as Lower Sproul, Upper Sproul, and in front of Dwinelle Hall. Without mirrors, the most important thing I learned about dance is collaboration. That you have to rely on other people to give you feedback to gage your body position because you do not have a mirror to reflect on. Therefore, I 3D printed leaves which represents the outdoors where we practice. I made earrings because I wanted to wear these when I dance. When I continue dancing, mostly like in an indoor studio, wearing these earrings, I will be reminded of how it was like dancing outdoors, how important it was to help each other.
Design Process
1. Brainstormed what to represent my Berkeley Dance experience
2. Chose leaf concept create earrings so I would wear them a lot.
3. Digitally drew the leaves on Illustrator and exported a .svg file to Autodesk Fusion 360.
4. Created 3D object using that image in Fusion 360
