RIngprint

The ring is intended to portray the notion that things may seem very simple but hold a lot of meaning. I designed the exterior to be plain except for the two holes so it would illustrate simplicity. I choose to extrude text on the inside of the ring so that it was in a sense hidden and would be more apparent after you wear the ring when it left an imprint on your finger.

This was my very first time 3D modeling. It was both a very challenging and fun experience. Some key things I learned was that the it is difficult to get detailed work to show up well using the 3D printer. The text was small and not fully legible. In addition, the text on the inside also got partially squished down and deformed after wearing the ring. This would be a cool ring to 3D print using metal material where it would be sturdier and display the text better and clearer.

Make One Yourself!

1. Create a cylinder in a 3D modeling software (I used Autodesk Fusion 360) and extrude out another cylinder to create the ring structure. Make sure the diameter is 3 mm wider than the diameter of your finger.

2. Use the sketch tool to add text to the place perpendicular to the cylinder and place it inside the cylinder.

3. Extrude the text "to" the inside of the ring, instead of a certain distance. Click on the inside of the ring to do so.

4. Cut out a cylinder on the inside of the first cylinder the diameter of your finger.

5. Add two holes to the outside of the ring and you are done!
