Volume Lamp

This project is called a Volume Lamp. As the name implies, it is a lamp that can be used to control volume, specifically that of a computer. When the USB cable of the Volume Lamp is plugged into a computer, the Volume Lamp will light up and, depending on its position, its lights will change color, as it changes the volume. When it is standing upright, its default position, the Volume Lamp will glow white and do nothing to the volume. When it is tipped on its side, it changes the volume of the computer, making it higher or lower depending which side it is leaning on. The change in volume continues indefinitely until the Volume Lamp is no longer leaning on its side or until the volume has reached its maximum or minimum value, while the lights will continue to display their changed color for as long as the Volume Lamp is on its side.

When the Volume Lamp is tipped on the side from which its USB cable extends, its lights turn green and the volume grows louder. When the Volume Lamp is tipped on the side opposite of its USB cable, its lights turn purple and the volume gets lower. The Volume Lamp also comes with a mute function and an off function. The mute function is activated by shaking the Volume Lamp, which triggers red flashing lights for a single second to signify that the volume is muted. Shaking the Volume Lamp also deactivates the mute function with the same lighting results, which means that if the volume is already muted, it will be unmuted when the Volume Lamp is shaken. The off function comes into effect when the Volume Lamp is flipped upside-down. When this happens, the Volume Lamp's lights will turn off and the volume will remain unaffected. To turn the Volume Lamp's lights back on, simply flip it right-side up again.

I decided to create the Volume Lamp for the purpose of creating a new way to control volume, while also providing a quaint source of light for the user. Volume has been controlled using buttons and dials, but it has never been controlled by moving a lamp, lit up or otherwise, until now. The changing lights were set up to add visual appeal to the project, so that the Volume Lamp would be more than simply a glow-in-the-dark switch. The off function was added to the Volume Lamp so that users would have the option if they ever wished to turn the Volume Lamp's lights off.
