Almost every day, I find myself sitting in the living room without a computer or smartphone nearby, wondering, "Do I have any new comments on my blog?" There's never been a way for me to find out... until now.
My project is a skill for Amazon's Alexa-enabled devices that provides a voice interface to blogs running on WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress blogs that have installed the massively popular Jetpack plugin.
Blog Helper utilizes WordPress.com's REST API, and it currently provides three main points of functionality:
- To check your notifications, just ask: "Alexa, open Blog Helper and check my notifications." Alexa will read the new ones to you one-by-one, marking each one as read as you listen to it.
- You can create draft blog posts with Alexa too. Say, "Alexa, tell Blog Helper to create a new post called 'My thoughts on gardening.'" This skill will save the post as a draft so you can expound on your ideas later.
- Comment moderation has never been easier (or more vocal). "Alexa, ask Blog Helper if I have any new comments," and you'll be able to approve, delete, or mark them as spam.
Now I never have to wonder if I have any new comments, since I can always just ask Alexa. Now I just need to write something on my blog worth commenting on... Maybe my next project will be a skill that asks Alexa to leave a comment on my blog.
