I am excited to share my very first project published on Hackster.io, created in collaboration with PCBWay: unique fluorescent PCBs! This project aims to transform traditional PCBs into luminous works of art, combining technology and aesthetics in an innovative way.
The Story Behind the ProjectRecently, I stumbled upon a very peculiar PCB from an old DNA sequencer from the 90s that I had dismantled when I was younger. While playing around and sweeping my workshop with a UV lamp, I discovered it among many other old PCBs that I keep for their components. I was immediately dazzled and hypnotized by its luminescence. It was quite impressive and psychedelic visually because, under ambient light, the PCB seemed so simple and ordinary, but under UV light, it was incredibly bright.
Over the years, I have stored a huge number of salvaged PCBs, but I have not found any others as impressive. Around the same time, I was working on a project for a programmable electronic timer based on the Arduino Nano. I had already ordered several PCBs from a manufacturer in China, which was my first experience designing with KiCad and ordering PCBs from a manufacturer. Curious if they could manufacture PCBs using this type of varnish, I inquired, but they explained that it is no longer done nowadays.
That's when PCBWay found my timer project and offered to sponsor it. I immediately had the idea to embark on a slightly unconventional project combining art and technology through this partnership with PCBWay.
The process of creating fluorescent PCBs has been an exciting adventure:
Designing the Patterns:
- Using CAD software to design customized patterns and schematics.
- Integrating aesthetic designs that highlight the fluorescent properties.
Applying Fluorescent Varnish and Paint:
- Selecting specific industrial and automotive fluorescent varnishes and paints that react to UV light.
- Carefully applying these materials to the blank PCBs to achieve the desired luminescent effect.
Finishing Techniques:
- Ensuring a smooth and even application of the fluorescent materials for a consistent glow.
- Checking and adjusting to ensure both the aesthetics and functionality of the PCBs.
- Testing and Validation:Testing each piece to ensure proper functionality and aesthetic quality.Validating performance under different lighting conditions.
This project of fluorescent PCBs represents an exciting fusion of technology and art. I am thrilled to share these unique creations with the Hackster.io community and see how they will inspire other innovative projects.
Please follow this project to stay updated on new developments and upcoming steps. Thank you to PCBWay for their exceptional support, and thank you all for your interest and continued support.
