I have cats therefore I have cat litter boxes. The cat litter boxes reside in the basement but the casts reside where ever they want. How to keep the basement door closed but allow cats unfettered access to litter boxes? A cat door! But how will I be able to track litter box usage rates over the internet? Behold the Internet of Things cat door. This project combines a battery powered TinyDuino board, a reed switch and a magnet with a cat door to allow you to track cat door usage wherever you have internet access.
Simply swing the door open to access the TinyDuino USB port for charging. The electronics reside in the door above the hinge to help balance the door closer to neutral and decrease momentum door closing. If you balance the door with just a little more weight at the bottom then the top it will swing back toward closed with less force. This will allow for less cat vs door scared cat running into expensive breakable objects events. The front and back bezels can accommodate thicker doors. Should work for solid or hollow core doors. Bezel can be mouthed with screws or glued in place.
The hing is a simple 8 mm rod with 2 roller skate bearings. The door is held together with 2 1/4 inch self tapping plastic screws. This cat door design features optional wood veneers to match your existing door.
With a little programming you should be able to track the open on close events and determin how many events on average before the box is "full". Then have your cat door message you when the cat box requires ... cat waste removal service. Behold the future!
