Hello! My name is Gianna Sbarbaro and I a tenth grader from Oahu, Hawai'i. This past Halloween, I built a butterfly costume. Growing up in Hawai'i, I have become very close to nature and wanted to build a costume related to nature and biomimicry. Also, in a Design class at school, we were asked to design costumes. After researching what I wanted to make a costume with, I came across an article related to the state insect of Hawai'i and how it is going extinct. The Kamehameha butterfly is the state insect of Hawai'i and is endangered, however, not very many people know about it. I did some more research and decided to make this butterfly the subject for my costume. I made a variety of sketches before deciding on a final one. I also created design specifications, or a list of detailed specifications that my final costume must do or achieve. For example, one of my design specifications was to make my costume visually appealing, and I think that I accomplished that goal. :) Below are some images of the process of creating this costume and some images of my final product. Enjoy!
