BeagleBone Green Wireless Zigbee Cape is an open source project intended to add Zigbee Capability to Texas Instruments BeagleBone Green Gateway. The project was created by a group of 4 students from Iowa State University. The mission statement for this project was to research a new of existing wireless technology and add it to the BeagleBone Green through the use of a shield/cape and build an IoT network to demonstrate its new capabilities.
Hardware Overview
The the hardware portion of the project involved the construction of 3 different boards. The main board is the cape or the Zigbee hub for the BeagleBone. This board attaches to the top of the BeagleBone green through the use of headers. The Cape communicates with the BeagleBone through UART and connects to the Zigbee network. The first revision of the Zigbee cape needed to be modified slightly (see GitHub wiki) to make Zigbee work. The second revision has another problem that we are still attempting to fix. The 2 remaining boards also connect to the Cape through the use of headers. This time the communication is completed through SPI. The first board contains 8 switches and is an input to the system. The second board contains 4 high power relays and 4 low power relays. Both of these boards have been powered up but the IO expander has not been tested yet.
