Goal
The goal of this project was to become familiar with a 3D modeling program and develop experience with going from the virtual model to a physical 3D printed object.
Assignment
Design and 3D model a ring to be worn on one of your fingers, must be sized to fit you. You are free to use any CAD program you are familiar with including 123D Design from Autodesk.
My Project
I wanted to design a ring with a flower. After sketching out several designs, I decided that a complex band might distract from the flower. In addition, intricate bands might not 3D print very well, especially ones with detailed cutouts. Choosing to stick to a simple band, I spent more time designing the flower.
After I had a general idea of what I wanted, I started 3D modeling the ring and flower in Fusion360 from Autodesk. The band of the ring was pretty simple, consisting of just one sketch and "revolve" around a center axis.
The flower was quite challenging to figure out how to model. In the end, I ended up combining a few "revolves" and "circular patterns" to create the flower.
I printed a few rings of different sizes to see which ones would fit the best. Most of the rings were too loose, so I scaled the ring accordingly to fit my finger.
I then super-glued the flower and the ring together.
The ring fits!
