One huge frustration with the Playstation 3 controller is the outdated and fragile USB MINI-B connector. It's all too common to have a cable break or the connector itself become loose or damaged, making it anoyong to charge the controller. And let's face it, nobody uses MINI-B for anything else these days. It would be much more convenient to charge the controller with the same USB Type-C connector that we use for everything else, like our phones and laptops.
That's where the DualShock 3 USB-C Adapter comes in. It's the perfect solution for Playstation 3 gamers who want to upgrade their controllers to the modern and reliable USB-C connector. With this adapter, you can easily and quickly charge your Playstation 3 controller using the same USB-C cable that you use for all your other devices. Keep in mind though, the PS3 controller still needs the USB handshake to begin charging, so a host USB port is needed - most brick chargers won't work.
The installation process is simple and non-destructive, so you can easily remove the adapter and revert to the original connector if needed. And with the housing 3D printed out of matte-black XPETG, the adapter seamlessly integrates with the Playstation 3 controller, providing a sleek and modern look.
Under the housing, there is a small PCB, contating the USB Type-C connector and the two CC resistors, to make the adapter fully USB-C compliant. Keeping the length of the adapter short was crucial - and using a male MINI-B wouldn't work very well, along with such connectors beign anoying to source and solder. But the inside of a male MINI-B is just a plate with some flat contacts! With some careful design of the PCB dimensions and thickness and some gold pads, the PCB directly makes a solid contact with the socket when inserted.
Mechanical support is provided by the housing, that sticks to the controller case with double-sided tape. With this design, chances are that even if the original port is slightly loose damaged, the adapter will still make a good connection.
The PCBs come in panels of 30 with some carefully placed slots and V-grooves.
Once de-panelized, the PCBs are inserted into the housing and the double-sided adhesive strips are applied. The adapter is ready to go!
