Some time ago, I developed an adapter that converts PS3 controller's USB Mini B port to the modern USB-C we all love and use for most of our devices. I've since sold of them on Tindie, giving a much needed upgrade to lots of PS3 controllers all around the world. But why stop there? Playstation 4 controller (DualShock 4) still uses and outdated port - USB Micro B, arguably an even worse and more prone to failure connector than predecesor's Mini-B.
Following the same design philosophy, I designed an adapter for DualShock 4. No disassembly, no permanent modifications, no soldering and no special skills needed. Just stick it on and enyoj the new Type-C port!
DualShock4 is slightly more tricky, though. Mini B port on DS3 allowed me to design a PCB that slots into the connector instead of the plug. No such luck with Micro B. There is an extension (EXT) port on the other side of the controller, however, that conveniently accepts 5V for charging the controller. With some research and caliper work, I designed a PCB with some nice gold contacts that slots right in on the other side and has a Type-C receptacle on the other. Some CAD work and 3D printing later, we also have a nice housing that looks sleek mounted to the controller.
The housing is printed out of matte black XPETG which looks nice, matches the controller and is plenty sturdy to hold the adapter in place.
Mounting the adapter to the EXT port leaves the option to use the stock USB port as well, but also means that there is not USB data connectivity on the Type-C port. For most users that should not be a problem, as wired connection is only used for charging. If that is something that bothers you, stay tuned. I might have something coming.
I'm selling the adapter on Tindie. It's in stock and shipping worldwide. Check it out here: https://www.tindie.com/products/plab/type-c-for-ps
