We are going to clone the data from a 128GB mSATA drive from Vaseky that contains Windows and Ubuntu. The clone will be on a SanDisk SATA gumstick drive of the same capacity.
The cloned drive will work better than the mSATA because it's a faster medium. We move over to a faster computer to make the copies.
Look closely at the menus and you will see the drive names. This project frequently prompts you to check from which drive to which drive.
AdaptorsSource drive: USB to mSATA adaptor. Temporarily removed from PATA adaptor in Dell D410 i386 32bit computer.
Target Drive: USB adaptor for gumstick drive. Cloned drive will be installed in PATA adaptor for Install MX-Linux Dual Boot on 32bit Computer.
Copying whole drives takes a while on even a fast computer. Take a moment to look at the Disk Utility before we plug in our source and target drives. This computer contains a 480GB SATA drive
We need an online computer in the middle to perform the copy and cache data. Important! Remember the name so that we do not use these tools to erase the drive and destroy all of our data.
Connect the adaptor with the source drive. Check sizes, names and ensure you recognize which drive it is. We need to turn off all partitions and make the drive offline for cloning. Select each mounted partition and use the square stop button.
Connect the adaptor with the target drive. Check sizes, names and ensure you recognize which drive it is. All data will be erased in the cloning process. We need to turn off all partitions and make the drive offline for cloning. Select each mounted partition and use the square stop button.
Important!! We are going to erase everything on SanDisk SD8... Make sure it is the drive we want.
Start ClonezillaOpen a CLI command terminal and type $ sudo clonezilla. We need root privileges to open these drives. You may need to install the program.
Scan finds two drives. Frabjous day! they are both 128GB. One would assume that our copy will have no problems. If you do not see both drives then return to steps Source Drive and Target Drive.
You have two choices. Check which is copy from and which is copy to.
Target means ERASELast chance before erasing.
Accept defaults all the way. Check that you understand what each menu is asking you. We are copying every bit from a solid state drive to a second drive that has the same size. A bigger drive works better.
You will be prompted some more. The subject is always whether you are moving the correct drive
y/n makes you press the yes key or the no key. Defaults through to the exit.
Copy/CloneCopy sequence can last quite some time. Depends upon speeds of computer processor and the data buses between the devices. We are cloning an entire computer.
Now you should be able to mount either drive with the play button and confirm the data is the same.
Source drive and target drive.
To install in Dell410 we need the PATA adaptor card and the Dell laptop edge connector(polarized).
Boots okay and runs fine. Windows and Ubuntu both boot and performance is faster.
