Our state-of-the-art room monitoring device uses cutting-edge mmWave radar technology and PIR sensors to detect and measure individual movements accurately. Additionally, our device includes temperature and humidity sensors to monitor indoor climate, ambient light sensors for intelligent light control, and real-time access to detailed occupancy information via the Home Assistant dashboard. MagFlex is the mounting system for RoomSense IQ that uses a magnetic joint to achieve accurate sensor alignment, eliminating the need for a mechanical interface. With this innovative solution, the device can be positioned with precise angular and radial alignment in relation to the mount, making it ideal for accommodating various room shapes and sizes.

Our Story

RoomSense IQ is the brainchild of Sina and his long-time colleague Greg, who share a deep passion for home automation and DIY electronics. Their aspiration was to create a tool that could bring their vision of an ideal smart home to life, and their combined expertise and experience have made RoomSense IQ a prominent contender in the industry.

RoomSense IQ is specifically designed for smart home automation and security applications, utilizing a mmWave Radar with a 110-degree field of view and a sensing distance of up to 5 meters. This enables the device to accurately detect movement and occupancy within a room or area.

The Device offers an occupancy status physical signal, which can trigger automations or alerts depending on whether a room is occupied or not. Furthermore, the device provides distance to target measurement, which can be customized to activate specific actions based on the user's proximity to particular areas of the room.

It also incorporates a PIR sensor to reduce false alarms by filtering out non-human activities. This ensures that the device can differentiate between human and non-human movement and only initiate alerts or automations when necessary.

RoomSense IQ comes with integrated temperature, humidity, and light sensors that can be utilized for climate control or other purposes. Moreover, the device incorporates an RGB LED for WiFi status indication, enabling you to easily determine whether the device is properly connected to the network and functioning.

The system is designed to be highly customizable and integrates with the popular Home Assistant platform via the MQTT protocol. The system provides a free and open-source dashboard that can display a range of real-time data, including macro and micro energy levels in eight distance bins.

RoomSense IQ is powered by an ESP32S3 MCU, with built-in WiFi connectivity. The device also includes a USB-C port for power and serial communications, which makes it easy to connect to a computer for local controls.

We invested considerable effort to ensure that the device seamlessly integrates with Home Assistant, without the need for complex configurations or setups. RoomSense is designed to support auto discovery capability, which allows Home Assistant to easily detect and integrate the device into the larger smart home ecosystem.

To enable real-time and highly accurate energy level plotting, our HA integration is specifically designed to support rapid refresh rate. Achieving this required the use of DBMaria, custom plotting cards on HA, and finely optimized firmware that could handle the high refresh rate while maintaining accuracy and stability.

The system also generates occupancy signals based on user-defined settings. This means that the system can be configured to detect when people are present in certain areas of the home, and trigger automations accordingly.

Finally, the system provides a trend display of PIR motion detection, temperature, humidity, and light. This allows users to monitor changes in these parameters over time and make informed decisions about how to automate their home environment.

Components

• LD2410 Module is a human presence status sensing module that operates at a high sensitivity of 24GHz. It works by utilizing the FMCW (frequency-modulated continuous wave) principle.
• muRata PIR sensor is selected for it's super reliability, excellent detection distance and high sensitivity.
• The SHT30 is a digital sensor that is highly precise in measuring temperature and humidity. It is recognized for its exceptional accuracy, with a ±0.3°C precision for temperature and ±2% precision for relative humidity. Note that the temperature sensor may be affected by heat generated from other components on the same PCB, but we have isolated the SHTC3 and added a thermal cut-out to mitigate any interference.
• The ESP32-S3 offers WiFi connectivity, which has a broader range compared to Bluetooth and can provide coverage throughout your entire home.
• The Adafruit A161 photocell is a small, inexpensive sensor that can detect ambient light levels. The sensor provides raw values. Further calibration needed to convert the values into real Lux equivalent.
