Additive manufacturing has revolutionized how we see prototyping. In span of few minutes, a complete component is printed with high accuracy. As a mechanical engineer, I am fascinated by 3D printing and wanted to build something for myself.
Design Phase:
Since childhood I have been a fan of comic books and in past few years comics have been replaced by superhero movies. Since then I have been following Batman series very closely. Batman Signal has been a critical part of the comic series and this became an inspiration for my the design of my ring.
Ring:
I measured my finger size using a thread by wrapping it around my finger and then measuring it along a scale. The base ring has 3/4th circle and 1/4th flat surface at top to facilitate pasting of batman signal. Using SolidWorks, I completed designing the ring and batman signal and converted them into .STL files, a file type accepted by 3D printers. These .stl files were uploaded on 3D Afinia software and using ABS the two parts were printed. The printed parts were the joined together using Acetone. Using sandpaper, rough edges were smoothed. This gave a fine finish to the ring. Have a look below !
The final product after joining the two parts looks like this:
So don't wait and call Batman now... Use the ring and make the signal...
Happy Making !
