Tensorflow lite/micro provides a person-detection model for an example. This time, I would like to port the model onto Sony Spresence so that the camera attached to Spresense main board can recognize people in real-time. The "person_detect.tflite" at the following URL is a trained model for person detection prepared by Tensorflow lite.

In addition to the camera, since I'd like to see whether objects fit properly in the camera, I attached an SPI-LCD to display the image while performing the recognition.
Please see my previous project on Hackster.io. You need to set up Tensorflow development environments and Arduino IDE with Spresense Tensorflow library package.
The interface of TFT Display is SPI. To use this display, you need to use Spresense Extension board. The connection between the display and Spresense is below.
After preparing the development tools, you have to convert the person detection model to C language header so that Spresense can incorporate the model. Use the python code below.

This will create a header file named "person_detect_model.h". Then you should copy the file to the same directory as your Arduino sketch. The model is rather large (300 kB) for microcontrollers, you have to take care of memory space on Sprensese.

The model is quantized by int8, so you will get the recognition results as integer values. The result has two arrays, one for "person score" and the other for "non-person score". (not a binary classification).

I set the threshold of "Person Score" higher than 60 temporarily. Please change this setting to suit your environment.
Writing a sketch for the display image and resultsThe display portion of the sketch uses the Adafruit graphics and device libraries customized for Spresense. Please install these libraries beforehand. When the system detects the presence of a person, it displays a red square box on the LCD.

Let's try Person DetectionI tried to run it, and it works. The program consumes a lot of memory since it uses 300kB of the trained model, camera, and display. So when flashing to the ROM on Spresense, please be sure to set the memory setting of "Main Core" to "1152kB".
When performing the program, I could see that it displayed the red box when a person was present and the red box disappeared when the person was no longer visible from the camera. The recognition speed was 460 milliseconds.
I expected high performance from a network with 300 kB of quantized models, but the recognition rate was not as high as I expected. In a slightly dark environment, or in an environment with the evening sun shining through the window, I got false positives at a high rate. It seems indoor light would be the most stable.
This experience reminded us that in the case of embedded AI, the most important thing is not the size of the network, but rather that the objects to be recognized must be in a stable environment and trained with the images obtained where the microcontroller works.
However, it is often difficult to set up a stable environment. But in a case like that, I think it will resolve by Spresense HDR (High Dynamic Range) Camera released by Sony very recently. Thanks to its high dynamic range capability, it will produce stable images regardless of fluctuations in the environment even in darkness or backlight.
