Hey, hello friends, welcome back to my new article, I was working on a project that I will reveal soon. For this project, I needed a power supply of constant 5 volts and 2 amps, and while looking for voltage regulator options, I came across several, including the 7805, AMS1117, LM2596, and some adjustable step-down buck power supply modules like the XL4005.
However, these options had issues. For example, the LM7805 provides only a 1 amp output current, which isn’t constant, and is known for heating issues.
Next, I tested the AMS1117. This voltage regulator IC is good, requiring only a few resistors and capacitors for a very minimal circuit, but it only provides a 1 amp output current and has a very high dropout voltage of 1.1 volts, so it also wasn’t a good fit for my project.
Then I came across the TPS5405 voltage regulator IC, produced by Texas Instruments.
he TPS5405 is a robust and efficient step-down voltage regulator IC, making it an ideal choice for my project due to its wide input voltage range and integrated high-side MOSFET. It is designed for systems that require a fixed 5V output and can deliver up to 2A of output current, making it suitable for distributed power systems and consumer applications, such as home appliances and battery chargers.
I’ll talk about its specifications in detail later in the Article.
Schematic of TPS5405 Evolution board.
I’m excited to share the schematic of the TPS5405 evaluation board, a cornerstone of our project, which is now readily available for download. For those interested, you can download from my Github repository.
The journey from schematic to board involved meticulously arranging and positioning each component to perfection. Upon finalizing the layout, I embarked on the critical phase of routing the wiring, a step that brought us closer to realizing the full design of the PCB.This process not only epitomizes precision engineering but also marks a significant milestone in our project’s development.
The TPS5405 is a non-synchronous step-down (buck) regulator, designed to cater to a broad spectrum of power requirements with precision and efficiency. It is tailored for applications requiring a wide input voltage range and a stable output, characteristics that are indispensable in today’s versatile electronic devices.
Key Features of the TPS5405
- Wide Input Voltage Range: The TPS5405 operates efficiently across a 6.5 V to 28 V input voltage range, accommodating a diverse array of power sources.
- Fixed 5-V Output: It provides a stable 5-V output, a common requirement for countless electronic components and systems.
- Adjustable Switching Frequency: The switching frequency of the TPS5405 can be adjusted from 50 kHz to 1.1 MHz through an external resistor. This feature allows designers to balance between efficiency and component size, optimizing the system as per the application’s unique demands.
- 1.5–A Continuous Current Capability: It supports up to 1.5 A of continuous output current, ensuring reliable power delivery for a wide range of applications.

Testing. To put the TPS5405 evaluation board through its paces, I’ll be using my SMPS as the DC power supply, with the output voltage set to a robust 24 volts.
First, I’ll connect the SMPS to the AC power supply, and then carefully link the TPS5405 evaluation board to the SMPS’s output using wires. A word of caution here: this step can be quite hazardous, so if you’re not completely confident in what you’re doing, seeking assistance from a technician is highly advisable.
You’ll find the Vin and VOut labels on the back side of the PCB, complete with polarity indicators to ensure that connections are made safely and correctly. Additionally, this evaluation board features screw terminals for secure and straightforward connections.
Now, for the moment of truth: testing the board. With an input of 24 volts, the output fluctuates slightly between 4.9 and 5 volts. I believe this variation is within an acceptable range, but I’m eager to hear your thoughts. Should the output be a constant 5 volts, or is this slight fluctuation acceptable? Share your opinions and insights in the comment section below.
