Fischertechnik is a powerful construction toy and like Lego even comes with it's own line of computing modules and controllers. And just like Lego the toy shines when it used to visualize mechanics. But the controllers are usually black boxes. They come with easy to use graphical programming languages but they don't tell you how things work.
The Arduino on the other hand lets you explore its inner workings electrically as well as on the programming side. But the Arduino lacks on the mechanical side and building sophisticated robots with it can be cumbersome.
