I've always liked crystal carved crafts, beautiful and elegant, since the first time I saw some. They are very beautiful and transparent. It is a very artistic activity to do at home and is good for saving data over a long time - science fiction films often use it as material storage for data which is pretty cool and I hope someday it can be real.
So I decided to make some crystal cubes in a new way, with specimen data downloaded from osf.io, digimorph.org, etc. I collected some MRI/CT and Micro-CT scan results from osf.io, digimorph.org, etc.
Transform them to pointcloud data by Blender and shoot them into the crystal slices part by part. It also can combined into a whole cube. Each slice is a part and we can see the inside structure of the specimen.
It took me about 2 and a half months, back and forth between the factory and the design studio, but I finally got things to work and solved the production problem. In fact, cutting the crystal and carving was much more difficult than I imagined and I encountered a lot of problems.
