Chattanooga arts education non-profit, Art 120, hosted their first annual Dia de los Muertos Mercado on October 29th, 2016, full of festival fun and artistic culture for community members. Art 120 teamed up with Culture Philanthropy's El Mercado Latinoamericano de Chattanooga, local artists, storytellers, craftspeople, makers, and vendors to provide a unique learning experience in support of Chattanooga’s Latino and maker communities! The event included a community altar build, with items like candles, flowers, and figurines decorating the altar in honor of community members' loved ones! The altar is also an art bike, serving as a reference to the Art 120 Art Bike program that has successfully taught children to design and construct kinetic sculptures in the form of art bikes. The altar art bike will be featured in the MAINx24 Southside Parade on December 3, 2016!
Art 120 also hosted a student Art Exhibition and Art Supplies Drive for their friends and neighbors, The Howard School!
ELLA Chattanooga, Unifi-Ed, the HART Gallery, the Hunter Museum, Red Bank High School's Spanish Club, La Paz, Bess T. Sheperd, California Smothered Burrito, and Ayelet's Mexican Styles also joined in on the celebration! Artists Jason Doan, Christina Thongnopnua, Hannah Alysse Hahn, Paul McRae, WriteSpeakSee's Tracy Tanner, Doug Boals, and Cassie Joy Terpening, exhibited and sold their artwork, and Cassie also live painted during the event!
The artists listed above donated artwork to be included a silent auction benefiting Art 120's programming. ELLA Chattanooga also included artwork from the students and participants from their programs to benefit both organizations. The Hunter Museum donated tickets to their art exhibition and talked to attendees about the collection of Latin American art coming to Chattanooga from the Smithsonian. Unifi-Ed's Executive Director, Jonas, listened to the concerns of attendees about their County's education system and discussed ways the community can help improve the infrastructure.
